A few Error 01 coming up on the camera, changed battery to my 1DX genuine battery and not my 1DIV battery and that seems to have cured the issue. Love the lens. Just doesn't fit in my bag :)

Beauty shot Mike! Hoping I'll be even remotely as fortunate in a few weeks with a huge airshow in Abbotsford.

Thanks, hopefully the weather at yours will be a little better as tbh it couldn't have been much worse at the one I attended.

Sorry to hear that - and yes, definitely hoping for good weather here. Doesn't make for an overly fun outing - fortunately, you can't tell from your shot!

Comes with its own bag, doesn't it? I usually ask my wife to carry it. :)

So, had the chance to put this lens into action straight away, good lord. Images didn't really do much for me on the LCD of the camera, different story on the laptop.

Hand held it for about 3 hours yesterday with no straps on the camera or lens. Really enjoyable day and this is why.

Processing shots from EAA AirVenture 2016 in Oshkosh yesterday (7-29). Weather was terrible and didn't clear up until about 3:30pm after the Warbirds demo. Still, I was able to get decent handheld shots during most of the afternoon show. I used the Sigma on a Manfrotto 055 tripod with an Induro GHB2 gimbal head and remote trigger. Honestly, it was really frustrating. It's a great head, but you cannot accurately pan/track fast aircraft going over 400-mph. The focus point was all over the place. I took it down and used the lens handheld for over three hours. My arms are killing me, but it was worth it, and can be done. I'll post a few more when they get processed.

That's the biggest annoyance for me.. I think everyone who does aviation goes through that stage.. Buy a big lens and think that a gimble head will be usable. Once an airplane goes above a certain speed, or does loops etc, it's just too impractical to be useful. Much easier to handhold, but then I struggle trying to keep the lens steady. After a while you do get used to the weight so your wrists don't kill after an hours use, but yeah.. it's a love hate relationship. I recently bought a much smaller Canon 100-400 II and I'm really struggling with that as well, AF seems to hunt a lot but the sigma is fast.. much faster..

oh.. and nice shots.. we need more aviation shots in this thread hehe

Thanks Vladdo - your assessment is dead on. I do love how the Sigma offers zoom control by using the push/pull method vs. turning the ring... a lot easier on your wrists...

Couple more from EAA AirVenture 2016 in Oshkosh... I really struggled to keep the F/A-18 Hornet in frame, handheld — not tack sharp. It did a flyby of the flightline at 600mph... note the compression wave on the wings.

first off a couple of tips from the comments over the last couple of days .

darkhorse44 if you put the lens hood on with the fixing screw on the left hand side rather than top or bottom it makes tromboning really easy

dexy101 have a look at getting a think tank glass-limo bag two advantages it takes a gripped camera or 1D series body fitted to the sigma lens with the lens hood fully extended and is a nice easy fit ,plus the bag only weighs 1.5 kilos so is dead easy to carry

anyway back to some recent p.p a rock pippit with the 80D and a shortie with the now deceased 1D3
