I was asked by my daughter's school to do a Photography talk to the kids in the after-school program. I brought in a bunch of stuff (cameras & lenses) and did my best to show what the inside of a camera looked like, what different lenses do etc - less is definitely more. I decided as I was driving there that I might try explain to them, and have them help me pick the lens, pick the aperture, etc to take scary halloween pictures. It was a bit of a challenge but we figured it out together.
The setup that we figured out together (with some help from me) was:
- kid sitting on chair
- small flash stand just next to their head (left side)
- green or orange gel on the flash
- 70-200 lens on camera to isolate child
- F 25 to completely kill the light in the gym
- SS 1/100 fast enough to freeze the action
I had the camera connected via HDMI to a small monitor so they could see their picture when it was done - they loved this.
The pictures required a little bit of work in Lightroom for sure.
Parents loved them as did the school.
