SOOC Jpeg. No PP. Just got home from one of my daughter's Xmas parties, slapped it on put the camera into AV mode - was impressed by how much more SS headroom I get at f/1.8. Was able to easily notice the loss of working distance in comparison to the 17-55 2.8... and the AF although snappy enough was IMO just a smidge behind the Canon... unless I am just having placebo effect.

In the first batch of pictures QUICKLY noticed how easy it could be to miss a well focused shot because of DOF - of course testing was done with flash and SS speed of 250 because the room I was in has poor lighting and it is late at night... For the moment it looks like the copy I have is decently spot on focus/sharp. Have a train car dinner this coming week and will likely test this lens out without flash then in the train cars...

So now if I end up liking this lens the question becomes if I should keep the 17-55 as a general use when lighting is good... or sell it and stick to just the the 18-35.. eeeh premature thoughts I guess until I put it through it's paces right? Thanks everyone for the warm thoughts and congrats. This community is what helped convince me that it was this lens over the 35Art... although that one may end up in my gear bag someday as well lol...

This lens is REALLY making me want to ditch my 17-55 2.8... so far I only have two gripes and they are minor. One is that I wish it was a little longer! I personally wonder how much bigger it could get while adding 5 or 10 more mm to the focal length - I honestly don't think it's a huge lens now but what do I know! The second gripe is one I knew was there beforehand but bit my lip while making purchase... that is the zoom ring having an opposite throw to Canon zoom rings... because it is such a limited focal length it is not a major issue when taking pictures... but I just had my first incident of trying to video with this lens and AGGGGH you could see when I messed up due to muscle memory... that said having 1.8 and some zoom ability while in a dimly lit room was awesome! The video results looked great on screen and the colors POP

I don't understand the math of focal length to aperture so who know how much bigger a 18-45 f1.8 would be. For all I know the focal length was limited to not only keep the size down but also the cost. You should get used to the limited range. I came from the signs 17-70 so t was a shock to me at first. I do normally have a 50mm (f1.8 mk1) with me as well just in case I want a bit more reach. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't thos this lens is huge!

That is one of those slightly annoying things with third party lens manufacturs. It's made even worse by sigma since some lenses rotate like 'canon' and others like 'nikon'. I own sigmas two best crop lenses the 18-35 and 50-150 OS. The 18-35 rotates 'nikon' style but the 50-150 OS rotates 'canon' style.......

Yes, I own the 50-150 2.8 OS as well and LOVE that lens.. and am always looking for good excuses to pull it out lol. I am definitely going to try and keep the Sigma 18-35 1.8 on my camera for the next couple of months as the primary medium tele... if I can get used to the missing range I may sell the 17-55 to fund an 85 1.8 most likely. Thanks for the feedback as well. Was hoping it wasn't just me. Now off to some pictures of the kids watching Polar Express in a train car this evening!
