Aloha, I currently have the 580 EX II which I'm thinking of selling and purchasing the 430 EX II to take advantage of the built in wireless capabilities. Is the 430 EX II a big drop off in performance? I'm just wanting a good off camera flash for an upcoming shoot.

Mahalo :)

What built I wireless capabilities do you mean? The 430exII doesnt have any wireless capability thst the 580exII doesnt. The 430exII has roughly a stop less power than the 580.

The 580EX II can act as a Master on the 5DII to control slave flashes like the 430EXII, but not the other way around.

You need a Master device of some sort on the camera to transmit commands to remote flashes. Your simplest approach would be to buy two YN622C radio triggers, which can act as either transmitter or receiver. One on the camera, and one under the 580EXII. You will find that reliable and versatile, once the Canon rules for using the 5DII's flash control menus have been grasped.

I tried retiring, but gave it up - it's a dead end

Your 5DII has neither optical nor radio hardware to control a remote flash. As Clive suggested, the Yongnuo transceivers are a good (and economical) choice to control Canon compatible flashes remotely. There is no need to dispose of your 580EX II.

No, no built in wireless in the 6D. The only wiresess in the 430exII is the optical system. The 600ex has radio triggering but you still need a STE3 or another 600ex to master. Ni canon body has built in radio master. Your best bet is a pair of ýn622c triggers.

Maybe you're thinking about wireless network working (wifi) on the 6D?
