My apologies if my comment came across as trying to ridicule anyone's opinion or suggestions, and certainly not implying opinions/suggestions are in any way unwelcome. It was a tongue in cheek remark about people's expectations/resistance to change. Having only read the last several pages, it appeared to me the "mouse over" was becoming a major sticking point, in what is a brand new roll-out, that is already looking at upgrades/changes/additions. Frankly I'm amazed at how Pekka et al put this together in the first place, let alone find time to breathe between additional suggestions/requests for changes.

Maybe the "mouse-over" question (and maybe other contentious changes) should be put into polls. People can vote and back up their vote with reasons.

And Pekka can decide to ignore the results or not ;)

I think that would be a better strategy for gathering suggestions/opinions than a back-and-forth in threads like this.

The only problem with that is that people could create fake accounts just to sabotage the poll which would/could provide inaccurate results.

But remember - Pekka's doing this all himself, not relying on "That's the way we've always done it" but trying to find a better way.

You're starting with a blank slate as to what a "mouse-over" would show. Perhaps this discussion of the feature should be a separate thread; what would people really like to see as a post/thread preview? Perhaps the latest post (or the first unread) would be more helpful in assessing the merits of the thread than the first post. Often the initial question someone asks is poorly worded, vague, insubstantial; subsequent questions, and answers, would give a truer indication about the topic under discussion. In other cases there's thread-drift; wouldn't you rather know that the thread's gone way off topic and is now more of a chat thread than a real photography issue?

I always found that vBulletin's way worked for me. Opinions, now: The beginning of the first post, if it's text rather than image, is a better text to show than the beginning of the last post. In Photo Sharing forums, especially certain ones, the last post often says "Great capture" or something of the sort.

The OP's avatar won't help. A forum page already shows the OP's name, and some members don't have avatars.

For members who complain that the hovertext is in their way, could it take the form of a popup somewhere else, perhaps in the left margin or a corner of the screen? Or make it temporarily replace the text in the gray notifications bar. Or, of course, be made optional so they can shut it off completely.

I don't see a way to convey that a thread has drifted to another topic unless you design an AI that can read and comprehend.

If people would create fake accounts for ANY REASON they will be banned from this forum for sure. The MODS will be able to tell the fake accounts I would think.

Let me start by saying I LOVE the new POTN. I'm not having any trouble with contrast, or margins, or font size or style, and I'm having a blast figuring out new things it can do. Pekka, you ROCK!

There is one thing I can't figure out, and one thing I miss. First, why do some members post counts show up and some don't? And why do member post counts show up on some threads and not on others? Is there something I need to click on to make it consistent?

And the only thing I miss is the little green button that showed if someone was online or not. It helps especially when I am buying and selling in the marketplace and get questions, etc via PM. I can tell if someone might be able to reply quickly, etc. I know that was part of the old software, and it certainly isn't essential to my enjoyment of the forum. I'm just curious if it's something you consider bringing back?

The information given below the avatar is controlled by how long the post is. For example if I quote you or add an image or just write a lot then more info shows.

If my post is short then less info shows.

When a post is short, the avatar is smaller and the information below it is condensed to fit the space. This condensation includes skipping the post count.

And the only thing I miss is the little green button that showed if someone was online or not.

Pekka has said he decided not to use it. It didn't exactly show that someone was online at that moment. The green light didn't shut off as soon as a person left.

As for the little green dot, I too miss this feature and found it useful. Pekka is looking into including it in a later version so please be patient. If he decides to include it then it will be new and better than ever!:-D

You can go to somebody's Home Page and look at their "last activity". Looking at Mark's Last Activity it says: 10 seconds ago, so I assume he is online now. :)

Last Activity may be "hidden". Last post may be an indicator as well. One can only guess however. -?

True. But on old POTN you could also have your status hidden. So that's no different now. :-)

Does lurking show as an activity?
