Hey everybody, another Yongnuo question...

I just got the YN-622TX and a YN-622C (thanks to some suggestions on these boards) which I am using to get my 580exII off-camera. I want to add another flash but not sure which one to get. I'd like for the flash to be ETTL and not just manual. I'm just confused as to which Yongnuo will do what? Does one of the models have the ability to be triggered directly from the TX on the camera (while still using TTL) without the need for a 622 or would I have to put a trigger under it? Or should I just look into getting another used 580exII or 430exII and put a 622 under that?

I'll stick to the two main units I know. 565ex and 568ex.

Both have: ettl, manual controls, same GN, and second curtain sync.
565ex has: an external battery port and distance scale.
568ex has: HSS and 180-180 degree swivel head.

No yongnuo flash has a built in 622 receiver at this point. I feel like that should have done that before their 600ex-rt flash but thats just me. So any YN flash you get will need a 622c attached to it to be used with the 622 system

Thats your personal call. The 565ex and 568ex sit in-between the 580exII and 430exII when it comes to power level. All comes down to what yiou want out of a flash and how much you're looking to spend.

Thanks Gremlin. I've been reading here, Amazon, youtube and anything else I can get my hands on regarding all of this but trying to figure out which flash can do what, what trigger does what and what functions are supported via the various combinations is making my head spin. I'm sure it's not that hard but for some reason I just can't wrap my head around it. I'm getting there though. I think the 568ex would suit me since I'd rather have HSS than the ability for using an external battery. Actually I guess the 568exII would be better? Again here we go with not only different models but what the different versions of the models offer.

Well the 568ex vs 568exII decision is made a little easier since the 568ex is no longer made ;)

I'm sure you could find them used but I have not seen any new in months.

The added bonus of the 568ex II is that it has wireless optical master controls built in.

I have owned both the 565ex and 568ex. I was an early buyer of the 565ex so I had early control board issues with the ones I owned that caused flash failure (the issue has long since been fixed on them). I now own 568ex's for the hss and full swivel head (great for on camera use but pointless for off camera)

Note the 568EXII does have an exposure bug... Not sure if that was ever resolved so know that also.. Another thing is also keep an Eye on the Pixel Mago.. it is powerful and decently built.. Currently you can't though control manual with YN622 only ttl.. although that may be fixed later in FW. Unlike the YN568EXII the Mago has a usb for firmware updates.. I tested it and its much more powerful that the YN568EX and in some cases the Canon 580EXII.. http://brianhurseyphotography.com/blog/?p=711 (external link) . The mag you can get for around 80$ which is an insane value considering the build quality... Im also testing a flash form Voeloon... no rec on that yet because I'm still testing. Bothe the Mago and the Voeloon are better built than the YN flash it seems.

I have one that I purchased about 4 months ago and it has the problem. The issue is that when using bounced flash in TTL mode it underexposes badly (this is with the flash metering mode set to 'evaluative'). The work-around solution is to set the flash metering mode to 'average', which works ok but not as well (IMO) as evaluative.

Watch for my review on the Voeloon V760.. It already works with the Cactus V6.. About to test the YN622C.. The Pixel Mago does not work work with the V6 and YN622C it is limited to only TTL..

You also may want to look into the YN600EX-RT or the Shanny one you can have a full canon system setup.. Looks impressive..
