I was out this afternoon with my 6D and 24-105 and I took my camera out the bag, took 2 or three shots then got a error 01 lens communication. I took the lens off, the contacts on the lens and body looked fine. I put the lens back on but it refused to work. When I got home, I tried a different lens and it was fine. I put the 24-105 back on and it was fine.

Now the camera had been in a nice warm bag and it was around freezing outside. Do you think the sudden change in temperature had something to do with it? I thought both the body and lens were weather sealed.

That lens is known to occasionally develop a ribbon cable issue. See http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1235125 (external link) for details or search further on the web.

Thanks John. After posting, the problem re-occurred. Looks like the 24-105 is going to have to go for repair.

If you feel adventuresome there are some YouTube videos showing how to do the repair and the cable is available on eBay.

Thanks John. If it was a cheap lens, I'd give it a go but its my main walkround lens on my 6D and EOS 3 so I'll bite the bullet and pay for a Canon repair.

I had the same problem today with my 6D and 17-40 lens. After I came home I tried a few tests with different lenses and they all worked with the camera at room temperature, but if I sat the camera outside for a few minutes in the 40 degree temperature the err 01 message came up when I tried to shoot, the camera also set the focus to manual mode. I would try testing the camera in the cold with a different lens to pin down if it's the lens or camera.

I've had this issue with a couple of lenses. Seeing as how Canon charges a flat rate for the repair I figured I couldn't make it worse and...it worked. Saved myself a few bucks.
