I love shooting in the studio but frankly I'm getting a bit bored with the options that seamless backgrounds afford me. I've done the total black and white backgrounds but they don't provide enough interest for my taste. I've also shot with gobos and image reflectors to create patterns and shapes on the background but haven't achieved anything yet that has wowed me.

I understand the importance of keeping the main interest of a portrait on the subject however when I look at the photos by others that most inspire me they almost always have something interesting going on in the background while still maintaining the connection with the subject.

What I find most appealing in a headshot is a blurred background of some nice warm ambient with subtle highlights and low lights. But what does one do when those locations aren't available?

I realize that there are outdoor options but I'm looking for ideas for indoor shooting with my strobes. I would also rather not consider composites.

Here are two examples of what I'm referring to;

food for thought. rather than just patterns you can use a slide to project real backgrounds. Here's a thread i started a few weeks ago looking for options for a DIY LightBlaster. I have a ton of old slides and would also have no problem making more shots for other backgrounds. That might not be the case for everyone.

I have refined my rig but don't have any images to post right now. Pretty confident I will be able to get it working well enough to use with professional level portraits.

You constantly have to scout. The problem will be access, great scenes are in places that people have designed and decorsted for a reason. Talking them into letting you bring your gesr in is a challenge.
