UPDATE: My photo made it onto Bryan Pfeiffer's Blog, which in turn was shared by our local television station! Here's the link: http://bryanpfeiffer.com …/18/hot-birds-in-vermont/ (external link)

North Eastern part of the United States. Good sized bird, not small like a Goldfinch or Chickadee. It's okay to make me feel dumb, but I'm a bit stumped! He has been hanging out all afternoon eating cracked corn. (CONFIRMED: it is a young male Baltimore Oriole)

Good ones, Sandy; these would have had me digging through the field guide too, especially in December!

Thanks for the ID help, and the compliments. This is certainly an impressive bird this time of year. I have seen a pair here in the summer, but they didn't hang around long enough for a photo. They really stand out in their summer plumage. Is cracked corn part of their diet?

I imagine it will eat whatever it can find this time of year. I've never seen one here in winter, but there are records of them staying around. Last year I had an American Tree Sparrow hang around until mid June--really strange for Southwest Ohio since they breed in the arctic.

Grape jelly and/or a half of an orange should make him happy. They also will eat suet. There's been a few seen over the past week in Nova Scotia too. The pic is that taken by a friend.

Thanks Ian. I almost checked your Flickr to see if you had posted any shots of this bird. Normally when I get one I can't Identify, you have seen it a few days earlier than me!

I've been gone most of the day today, but the Oriole was here before I left this morning, enjoying the suet...just like Ian said!
