Wildlife setup

So I am considering switching to a mirrorless camera setup but my hesitation is about wildlife photography. I currently use my canon t2i mostly when I travel and I take a lot of wildlife pictures (bif) and landscape. I know this 2 types have differents needs but my main requirement is for wildlife.

Is there a mirrorless camera that has fast autofucos with a lens like the canon 100-400. I read that if you use an adapter for the canon lens then you loose AF and probably image stabilization.

I like the a6000 but the sony lenses don't have the reach I want and you loose IS and AF when using a canon lens.

I thought about the a7ii because of the IBIS but how is the AF and tracking when using an adapter?

Is there no mirrorless setup yet that meets my needs?

I have a Sony Alpha 6000 and a cheap Commlite EF-NEX AF adapter that I bought for $84, image stabilization works but auto focus is slow, I don't know if the Metabones AF adapters focus faster or not because I was not willing to spend $400 on it.

I doubt there is anything in sonyland that works well for mirrorless and BIF..... and if there was, I wouldnt want to be the guinea pig. It's taxing enough on DSLR's

Forgive my ignorance here with the new Sony's,
but doesn't Sony make a line of DSLRs that use the old Minolta mount?
Is this all incompatible with the mirror-less?

If the answer to the last question is yes, than the rest of my reply is moot.

Get a SIGMA 500mm f/4.5 EX in Minolta mount used, and put it on your Sony with in body IS, and you have a great low cost birding set up.

There are adapters for A mount to E mount that work.

With the Sony A7II and its built in IS you will be able to benefit from that using any lens you can adapt.

However, if you are looking for native AF speed the only real option becomes the Sony FE 70-200 F/4 OSS. Has stabilization built in or with an A to E mount adapter the Sony FE 70-200 F/2.8. This last one is much more expensive.

As Cyber mentioned you could always adapt basically almost any lens to a Sony A7 camera. Just find the adapter but be warned AF will be slow to basically unusable. You will lean on MF for your images. If you are okay with that then there are tons of options from all of the different lens brands.

There are a number of good (though arguably not as good as Canikon) tele zooms and primes in the A mount which can be adapted retaining quick AF. Not cheap though. The Sony A mount 70-400G (adapted) for example will serve as well as the v1 100-400L

I was afraid of this. I need fast AF to track moving animals and maybe I can do it manually but i don't feel that I can. Image stabilization is also important to me cause I mostly shoot handheld. I use a tripod onky for night photography.

Oh well. I will just wait and hope that sony comes out with some telephoto lens for the e-mount.

Read the post directly above yours about using A-mount lenses, you can click on the link I posted previously to see the Sony A-mount to E-mount adapter that lets you use those A-mount lenses.

Yes, you can either (A) get Sony FE70-200/4 ($1500), or (B) Sony LA-EA2 ($270 new ?) and any of the Sony or Minolta A-mount lenses. You lose the stabilization (but a simple monopod works fine for me) but get full speed AF.

This was taken with Nex-6 and a $90 Minolta 70-210/4 (the Beercan), at 210mm, handheld at 1/100, nearly wide open in low evening light, ISO 3200. Should get far better results in good light on monopod.

Actually, since you're considering A7II with IBIS, losing stabilization should not be an issue for you. There's some choice of long glass for Sony A-mount. Check Dyxum.com for starters.

Ex-Canon shooter. Now Sony Nex.
