Ive been playing with the thought of buying an a7r to replace my 6D. However i think i might make a step which i would regret, so i thought of buying the A7r alongside and give it a try with my EF lenses.

I mostly do landscape and architecture where the better sensor would give me benefits over the one on my 6D. Also i would not need to buy any FE lenses as i can MF my 16-35Lii and the 24TSEii (anyway only MF). The 50L is a lens i would also want to keep, but i would have to test the combo first..

Ive just seen a used one selling on ebay for 1550$. Is this a good price for it or do you think the price might drop more when a A7R II comes out?

The A7r + 24 TSE is a killer combo. I would pick one up to try along side your 6D. No A7rII rumored but rather an A9 rumored at almost 3k. I dont see that affecting A7r prices at all.

I was considering making the switch from FF DSLR to mirrorless and picked up a nice mirrorless camera. What I've found is that the mirrorless alone is a fantastic piece of kit but it doesn't replace the DSLR for everything I shoot. Now I use the mirrorless and a slimmed down DSLR setup. They compliment each other quite well in making a complete kit. That being said I would recommend picking up the A7R before dumping the 6D.

I just posted this in another thread (which is exactly the same question/topic);

I just made the exact switch myself, but I did it because I really wanted a smaller camera and focus peaking since I have entirely MF lenses.

So far so good. The EVF takes some getting used to, but it's not as bad as DSLR purists would have you believe. I obviously can't speak for AF performance, but the camera does work well for MF (though honestly I don't think it's any better than the 6D with an EG-S screen was despite what people tell you).

I already find the controls faster and more intuitive than my 6D thanks to all the customization, that's a pro I didn't expect, but the camera is a pleasure to shoot with. So far the files haven't blown me away (been wearing my flame suit a good while now  ) but they are nice, below ISO3200 I'd say they look similar to the 6D, though the colors are very different and take some getting used to. The extra resolution is pretty cool and you do still get lots of detail at high ISO like with the 6D, but colors don't hold up nearly as well in my experience so far.

If you can make the trade like I did (after selling the 6D I only had to put in about $150 to get the a7R) and you're super curious than I'd say it's worth trying out. You can always resell the a7R and go back to your 6D if it doesn't work out.

I'll add; I don't the there's going to be an a7Rii personally, I think the a9 is going to fill that gap. Hopefully I'm wrong, because I really like the way they've lined up their cameras now and I still have my eyes/heart set on an a7S.

And for what it's worth, I paid $1350 for my a7R and it looks almost new, one tiny little scratch on the body right by the Sony logo, but it functions perfectly. I saw a couple more listed used for around $1400, so you should be able to get one around that price if you're patient.

you'll probably love the A7r. I got mine for 1499 Buy now on fleabay months ago. Scope fredmiranda, sometimes they pop up for 1500 or less. There was a killer deal weeks back for the a7r + grip for 1400 new from amazon..... not likely to happen again, but worth a mention.

I'm sure that I got mine for $1350 and at the same time I bought it there were 2 others listed for $1400.

There's one up for $1484 right now ;)

Just a few months ago I got an A7R, I love it, I was shooting a Canon 1DS MKII, I still have the Canon, I am going to test them both in low light, I have never really thought about that until the other day I was doing some night Christmas light photos, I noticed the noise in the shadows on the Sony and want to see how they compare.

Other than that I love the Sony, I have done several landscapes with it and some portraits, I just can't say enough about how the images look, just fantastic. But Don't expect auto focus to work for you with your canon lenses, it is so slow you would grow a beard before it focused, but with focus peaking manual focus is fast and accurate. It didn't bother me to go back to manual focus, I shot for years with medium format before the days of auto focus.

I just don't think you can go wrong with the Sony!!!

Ive just seen the prices for a metabone adapter. Is that true? 400$ for a damn bit of plastic?? I mean would the autofocus work perfectly fine then okay but like that 400$ is a bit much IMO

Nope the AF will still be slow as a turtle.

There are other cheaper options as well David. I know many have posted on this board in regards to them :)

From what I've read there's really no reason to get the Metabones anymore, there are other brands which work exactly the same for a fourth the cost.

I have the Commlite adapter for mine, but no AF lenses to test it with yet. It's built extremely well and fits snuggly.

The metabone are expensive because you can control the lens aperture and pass exif information to the camera. Its worth the investment.

Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 70D, Canon EF 24-105L, Tamron 150-600mm, Tamron 70-200 F2.8 DI VC USD, Sony A7r, Sony FE 55mm F1.8

No it isn't, because you can do the same thing using the cheaper adapters now...

The Commlite I have is $100, it does every single function that the Metabones v4 does.
