I woke up this morning, looked out of the window and saw this guy in the water! According to eBird, this may be the first Western Grebe in my county since 2013! Thanks for looking!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Whoa! That's incredible. Would love to hear a follow up if you start receiving confirmations on that!

Actually, it turns out it's the first in my city, not county. Still, I was pretty excited to see one!

Paid a visit to Dawson Creek Park in Hillsboro, Oregon after eBird indicated a profusion of wood ducks, up to 350 of them! It was a really rainy afternoon and it rained throughout the 1.5 hours I spent walking around. But the wood ducks were there, not quite 350, but I counted at least 125 of them. Here are a few of them! Hope you like them!

All taken with the 7D2 & 100-400 II.

Well, I went back to see if I could spot the mandarin duck.

This was the scene when I arrived at about 5:20pm. This is about a third of the wood ducks in the water, so that gives you an idea of how many there were even before the final flocks flew in.

Sure enough at about 5:40pm, about 20 minutes before sunset, a whole buch more flew in and about tripled the number there. So, I would estimate that there were more than 300 wood ducks there at sunset.

And yes, the mandariin was there as well! It was really dark and I didn't have a flash, so I cranked up the ISO, tried to brace myself and made the best of it. Here are a couple of shots:

Indeed. It's the only duck that is even more gaudy than the wood duck. :)

This is the first time I am seeing one. It must be an escapee or something, because it is native to China. I can't count it on my life list as it isn't an established population here.
