It will make it harder, but it depends on the camera. I think you'll still have a center plus 4 assist points if you shoot something like the 7D2.

I've had good success with BIF and airshows using both the 7D2 and 1DX2 and the 1.4x III. Here are a couple of examples with the 1DX2. The 1.4x III was mounted even though the reported focal length may be less than 400.

There are a bunch of excellent shots on here using that combo. Pick a nice sun-shiny day and you'll have a Blast !

100-400 plus 1.4TC on 5DIV @560mm, ISO 3200. Hand held @1/500 sec. Not bad!! I'm happy with the results although I did underexpose it a bit, the light was poor.
