This lens is much better than the previous version.

All images were taken at LA Zoo.

Great captures and looking forward to getting my 1D IV back from service so I can really give my copy a work out.

Meanwhile, here are a few more with the 6D of the Little Pied Cormorant from yesterday.

The first one could be better stopped down a bit for extra DOF to get the wing tips in focus too...but hey I am just enjoying having a workable 400m F5.6 now.

You had a really fun day! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I did. The photos were taken earlier this month.

Finally had the time and mood to look through them today. I chose the ones that can show how sharp and contrast this lens can deliver.

I didn't do any editing except shrinking the photos. No cropping either.

Also, in case some of you are wondering, all animals are living animals. No sculptures or stuffed ones.

Hope you enjoy the photos.

PS I wasn't too impressed with the first gen. I sold it within a year after acquiring it. When I saw the announcement of this lens last December, I thought the RTF chart was a mistake. After looking through some reviews and the other most recent Canon lenses, I was convinced that this lens is much better than the previous version. After having it, yes, the RTF has no mistake. It is an excellent telephoto zoom lens!

I was also somewhat disappointed with the original 100-400. I bought the 300 2.8 II a couple of years ago in pursuit of IQ. It is a fabulous lens, but it hasn't been out of its case since I got the 100-400 II. Over the next few months, I'll have to decide whether to sell the 300 or not. The 100-400 II is definitely a keeper.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Great shots all Gus, but love the Lorikeets, such beautiful rascals. Opening zippers on my camera bag and mucking about. One got unnoticed in my wife's backpack. Judging by the mess he made he was in there for a while. Went to shoo him out and the bugger bit me. Also tried my hand at Osprey BIF, mostly failed. They can dive so fast.

Thanks John_T, sounds like you spent some time down under, were you here on holiday or are you an Ozzie living in Switzerland now?
Yeah, the Lorikeets are comical to watch, such characters and as you say they are cheeky buggers too:lol:

Cheers
Gus

Wow; that is a beautiful composition. If I had taken it, the only thing I'd wish that was different was that the vertical trunk behind the birds was just a tad more OOF.

Thank you John Sheehy, I agree, however, that was with the 100-400II at 5.6 and at 400mm, the stump they were sitting on was sort of mid trunk, so the trunk of the tree is pretty much on the same plane as them. I guess I could blur the trunk a bit in PP, may give it a go and see how it looks.
