Probably has something to do with the number of elements @ the distance between the subject and it's background + the objective lens (it's no 300 F2.8). Probably some amplification occurs just because of the nature of the number of elements. That's my non technical + beer consumption Hypothesis. This is where one would probably do some post + cropping, but I'm too lazy and would just wait another day.
