Here are some pictures that I took at Xmas. The first was the "best" of that day and the second is a "fuzzy" picture. That often happens when I am taking photos inside with my Rebel. All advice welcome...

1.

This is from Xmas. It is probably the "best" of the grouping that day.

This is from the same day. It is one of the "fuzzy" pictures.

All images were cropped a little and resized for internet purposes. All comments and CC welcomed.

Thanks,
Troy

Are you just using the "in-built" flash?

The built in is a little poor and a flash gun can be bounced which will give far better results.

Both the lenses you have are not that fast so are better suited for outdoors. Saying that a better flash will help and like you have done up the ISO.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm hearing a lot of people say I need a flash for indoors. Does anyone know of a good one for the Rebel??

For a less expensive option, try the Canon 420EX, works together with the DRebel. A better, and more expensive option, is to go with the 550EX, or its successor, the 580EX.

This threadfrom the EOS Flash FAQ sticky should help.

Since the Rebel doesn't have FEC, I would recommend a flash unit that does.

The kit lens is fine for indoor snapshots, but it can get a little soft when it's wide-open. Using an aperture of f/8 or higher should help.

Ignore any advice to buy more lenses until you're confident that your skills can make the most of the ones you have.

Troy

From my point of view the second does it for me - may be a little PP and you have a keeper

I would have a go but you have not set IMAGE EDITTING OK tag

but as I said two is the keeper - so natural etc etc etc

It does. It is a menu item. FEC (Flash Exposure Compensation) I dont have my manual or camera in front of me, but its there... not quick to find but its there.

I have the Rebel (Called a 350d in Australia) and I bought myself the Canon 430ex speedlight... and BOY !@!! Was I impressed.

If I could permanantly remove the on cam flash now, I would (not that I need to :)

If you bounce off the ceiling (if its viable) you can get GREAT diffuse light and avoid burning and hotspots.

A flash is an investment... good luck.

Attached is the same photo, with bounce and without... no editing in post (except scale and save for web)
PS: Sorry if they dont link properly its my first time putting up images on this forum.

    Peter.

Ah, hang on... does he have a Rebel or Rebel XT (if its the XT) then it does have FEC... if its the Rebel (what we call the 300d then it does NOT have FEC)

Sorry if its the 300d then my bad...
You can (I believe get a firmware hack that allows FEC)

    Cheers,
    Peter

What they said. External flash will do wonders for your indoor pictures.

Of course, after you get the flash you will need a flash diffuser. For snapshots I recommend the LSII.

And then a flash bracket and off-shoe cord. To help eliminate the shadows in portrait mode.

And then a better lens. For crisper, more colorful shots.

And then you'll want to ugrade the 300D to a 20D or the new 30D.

And then you'll want a better flash.

I think you get the idea as to where this hobby is going....

According the the exif on his images he has a Rebel 300D.
