...if I might mention it, you might also like to look at whether you've pushed saturation and/or contrast a bit much as that will also blob out detail. Could take a look at your monitor calibration too...

Love the first parrot shot. Great image.

I wanted to make sure before I posted this but I'm pretty certain of a behaviour of my lens, (which may not be the same for others).

One of the things that amazed me on my first shoot and had me fall in love with this lens, is just how sharp it appeared at both extremes, even wide open. Obviously not as good as it's "sweet spot" but nevertheless, an excellent performer considering that most lenses behave at their worst at their extreme ends.

Sadly, I think that I was just lucky the first time because since then, it has behaved erratically at it's longest end. I would say about 50% fully extended are non-keepers, not because of missed focus, but simply too soft. Anyone else finding this?

I do not believe it is possible for the lens to spontaneously change it's sharpness characteristics.
It is either sharp @ 400mm, or not. So ruling out miss focus is questionable, and of course as mentioned there are a host of other possible factors.

Very nice! One of my granddaughters loves birds. She's only 8, but perhaps she'll follow your granddaughter's lead.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Nice! Is that a juvenile harpy eagle?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.
