How about some buzzards instead? They are so prolific now that they are becoming a pest. We do have golden eagles but they have such a huge territory that I always find it thrilling to spot them.

- But m-o-m... I want to buy a new camera...

- How many times must I tell you to upgrade your glass before the body, young man?

While the image stabilization is very, very good on this lens, my experience with the 7D2 and 100-400 ii combo is that when hand-holding you still need to keep the shutter speeds up and use ETTR (or at least, avoid under exposure and trying to bring up in post-processing) if you want really sharp images (especially if you need to crop like one does when shooting birds and want all that feather detail). For example, images that I don't need to crop can look OK when shot at 1/200 (or less), but if you need to take deep crops, I like to shoot at 1/800 or faster (and shoot multiple shots to pick out the best amongst them). Others with better skills than I can undoubtedly do better, but that's my experience as a relative newcomer to the hobby. Doing both of these when the lighting is poor is obviously a challenge.

This combo can take great images though and I'm really enjoying them...for example, a ruby-crowned kinglet, and long-billed dowitcher below.

I have a Canon 1.4x iii teleconverter which I haven't used much, but I have a new tripod and gimbal head on the way and I plan to try them out as a combo with this lens and the 7d2 when they arrive. I'm looking forward to it.

Hey Medicineman, No I went out for a shoot with the Good old 7D. I can tell you it was nice to have consistent focus for a change. But I will say I missed the 7DII sensor for its iso and detail, Mine is just so much better. All this has really showed me just what not to do I can tell you, It also showed me there's no going back.

Another with this lens, this time with the original 7D. Again, kept the shutter speed up (1/1250). This is a Northern Flicker.

I really hope this lens is rubbish.

I have decided to hire one for a week over christmas and as its over christmas they wont take 7 day orders, they are giving me it for 7 days and adding on an extra 7 days free.
Ill be finished with it and heading away back to work before the hire is over but ill still manage a good 12 days with it.

It better be rubbish thats all I'm saying. I don't think the fiancee would be too pleased with me buying one when I'm having to pay for our wedding. :p
