As my copy of this lens is nearing the end of its warranty period I would like to ask a question I asked previously but never got the answer too.

When autofocusing, I sometimes hear a faint 'ping' noise from the lens. It's kinda like a very faint and much higher pitched version of if you flicked a crystal glass. It has done this from day one.

Anybody else noticed this? Normal? Something to worry about?

If you think something is wrong, I say send it in and let them check it out. You don't want to get caught with your pants down and have to pay for it. It won't cost you nothing, but some down time with the lens and maybe shipping cost. Remember, if you insured your gear, you should not have to insure it during shipping, which will save you some shipping cost, but check with the insurance company first. I have State Farm and that's their policy.

Good luck...Al

I just tried it several times and I hear a high pitched click. I don't think it sounds like a ping or crystal but that is pretty subjective. Only happens when I focus on something at a different distance. When refocusing on a previous spot it is not there.

It sure doesn't grind like my 300L f4 IS.

Interesting. It is happening only on larger focus shifts. I imagine it as an ultrasonic motor brake noise.

Agreed about the high frequency drop off of those elderly ears. I'm almost 40 but already the bats are starting to sound different ;-)a

Thanks for the answers everyone.

I'd kill to turn 50 again. Just wait. When you get over the hump and then the real fun begins.

There is a thread dedicated to older photographers here on POTN, and I am a member. Cry there! :-)

Had to take a few shots this morning to see what this thing was all about.
Not quite used to how it zooms, seems a little clunky even for me.

Beautiful images. With regard to the zoom being "clunky," what exactly do you mean?
