That's a Red-bellied black snake. One of the most common snakes in Australia, officially listed as deadly but don't know why, often won't even need a trip to hospital after a bite...

Because it scares people to death :p

Decided to try out some camouflage netting I have in an attempt to get closer to some woodland animals. The sun sets really quick these days, so went from nice golden side lighting to the usual dull post-sunset light, and the lens started hunting a lot more, especially if there were any small branches in the way. ISO levels quickly jumped, as expected. I can see why the Big Whites and their f/2.8 aperture are $$$$.

Another shot of a Northern Mockingbird; seems they're rather common around here, and one has a nest right out back of the house, so I'll have a good test subject over the winter.

well dave thats ok if it bites you mate  but i sure as hell would prefer one that size did not bite me  - and they are deadly but dont always inject the venom i believe if its just a warning strike - as why waste good precious venom on something it cant eat

cheers rob

Jeff,

And I'm glad for you. I know myself too well.... I would be second guessing myself for weeks if not months had I kept my new 7D2.

I really like the 1D IV but I can tell it's an older model. Jake, I am glad you feel the way you do.... no clear winner. I might venture into 7D2 territory in a couple years.... who knows?

But in the meantime, as soon as the rain stops, I'll be back out shooting again. The holidays are over and the guests are gone..... love to see them come.... love to see them go. ;)

Had one climb onto the kayak once on Lake Samsonvale. I was thinking about departing the kayak until I saw another one in the water! They can't half move in the water! The one on board got a flick of the paddle and flew through the air at a rate on knots, somewhat reminding me of my golf club and cane toad days ;-)a :-D

You're pretty safe in the middle of the big cities, but don't have to go too far out before encounters with these sorts of creatures become possible. We had a red bellied black snake in our suburban backyard once when I was a child. It's rare that people are killed by our snakes & spiders though!

Jeff do you usually "shoot to the right"? If so what's your typical EC for a bird like this?

I must say I don't normally, or maybe that's not right either, it has been really dark snow clouds lately, so I shot this in manual and using the meter I over exposed I think 2 1/2 stops, the raw looks very much like you see here. Really I did not do that much to the shot. It's a super close shot. I'll look but I think 5 feet. I didn't use any EC because I was setting iso as the camera would have wanted way to much iso. I did go far enough over to pull it back down in PP so I did ettr but I would not normally.
