I'd only get rid of the 500 if you felt you were missing out on the flexibility of zoom. Otherwise I believe on the 5D3 the IQ should be better than the 100-400 II on a 7D2. Haven't tested them side by side though.

I'm sure a lot would jump at the chance to do a swap (500 IS vs 7D2& 100-400 II) for you

I would not swap the 100-400LII for a 500mm, ....BUT....I'm shooting at varying distances and I've never been a prime shooter, It would be a major pain for what I do. I do everything from a full seen shot to just a head shot in the turn of the ring.

Thanks for the replies...in an ideal world I would add the 100-400 to what I have, but that isn't happening. It's flexibility that I'm after.

Anyone use the 70-300 L? How does that compare to the 100-400?

I'm not going to trade a 100-400 for a 500.

Found this roost today, Black flying fox roosting with Brown (grey headed).

One of the hardest things I've tried to shoot as they roost with their backs to the sun, hence their face is in the shade. Add to that the rain yesterday and despite the sun today, so much moisture in the air softens the image. Anyone that's photographed bats knows that they wouldn't look as if they were in such good light when roosting, it's just that opening up the shadows makes it seem that way. Anyways, I've done my best with a bit of post processing and I ain't no whiz at that,.......... but ............enjoy..........they may look cute but remember, they carry the Hendra virus which is a killer.

Great shots of these really interesting looking animals, although I think they're a little creepy looking too.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Looking at the stunning shots on this thread has got me thinking about getting rid of my 500 and adding a 100-400ii 7D2 combo, anyone done this? Loving the foxes, we have a couple come near our garden, hoping for some young next year.

well i know if i had a 500 i would hang on to it for dear life just look at some of the shots guys get with it - mate if you ever fancy a trip to africa or similar its worth its weight in gold i reckon but of course the 100 - 400 in v1 or better still the v11 is a very versatile and reasonably priced top class lens to own particularly for wildlife imho

cheers rob

Sett,

Very nicely done. The exposure is perfect.

Thanks Kim, when I shoot white, I always try to under expose not to blow it out.

We're not having winter this year, normally I would have feet of snow at the end of January.....I have 10 inches at most

You might want to PM the mayor of NYC Jeff, he will gladly ship some up to you. :-)
