Seen this?

Since you already have the 100-400....

DanC your work is masterful.
We've been looking at the Metabones EF--->mFT for fun since we have a collection of EOS glass and a few mFT bodies but
Tony Northrup said the combo of 'full frame' lenses adapted to mFT is bad.
Your thoughts?
Obviously you do not need AF.
The 400/5.6 is an outstanding lens and for many reason. I often regret selling mine.

Ah, but that is the joy of it. I DO now have autofocus * with the Canon 400/5.6. At 71 I was really beginning to get tired of manual focus all the time with my long (400-1200mm with TCs) lenses. To me the Metabones Smart Adapter is a game changer. I would love to try it with the 100-400II. Maybe have to rent one for a few days....

* AF is not blazing fast, but it is plenty fast enough in good light, and it is VERY accurate. Scores a clear 10 out of 10 on the AF chart. Not a millimeter of either front or back focus. At this point they have yet to crack the AF-servo (C-AF) nut, but they might. At this point I am VERY happy with the S-AF, even with the 2x Extender III on. Even there I still have 37 fully functional AF points. I would say that in good light, the AF speed drops perhaps 10-15% with the 1.4x Extender III, and perhaps 25% with the 2x.

I wonder if Tony Northrup has even really tried it? For a YouTube star he is not bad, but even he will not have time to try everything.

Yeah I like Northrup's demeanor, just sometimes he gets the info plain wrong...usually corrects himself when he does.
Well the MB EF--->mFT Smart adapter should be here Wednesday.
First combo I plan on trying is the Lumix GX8 + MB + EOS 300/2.8 IS II.
If I can get anything decent WITH autofocus I'll post up.
Read about the AF-C nut to crack....as you know with the af speed of mFT that's a non issue for static birds.

Please do. I know the older non-IS version of the 300/2.8 does not work, but from what I gather, the new one works splendidly! Dream lens, for sure, but it is facing some stiff competition from the new Oly 300/4 (less than half the price new as a used Canon) and the Pana/Leica 100-400. Very curious...
Light is always a big factor with AF, and especially with the mFT phase detect system. My 400/Metabones has a slight bug (firmware?) in that when I turn the camera on it automatically sets the f-stop to 8 even when there is no TC attached, and actually stops the lens down, and that one f-stop has a noticeable effect on the AF speed. If I just hit the lens release button, it pops open and functions normally. Just a little bug and easy enough to work around. I just have to remember to hit the button.

T.N.... he is one of the few I can take and I get the impression he is honestly trying to be objective and informative.

The Oly 300 and the PL100-400 are pre-ordered. One for me and one for the Mrs.
Hopefully by end of March I can ply them against each other at 300. I know the PL
wont be as but close would be nice. She's already figured a monopod will be a nicety for
that focal length.

This is what I use. (Home made)
https://www.flickr.com …/album-72157626095505667/ (external link)
Sorry, couldn't figure out how to rotate it....
I prefer it to a normal monopod with a head on it. It is faster and steadier. Might not be good to rest a zoom on the extended front tube, but there is certainly no problem with a prime or a non-extending zoom, or resting it on the zoom ring. Sometimes I also rest my hand in the U-support. Works well like that too. It has a (home made) point on it so I usually just stick it in the ground.

Yeah Jeff. 32d and humidity of 80%. Humidity's the killer, and the flog uphill to get these. Still can't hit one in flight though. Time to take the extender off methinks. No chance with it on

A few more
