Took the time to AFMA my lens today and it only needed -1 or -2 at both ends.

Afterwards, I also grabbed these two images (handheld) at the MFD, if anyone wants to see how crazy-thin the depth of field is (calculates to be 13mm at 100mm and 0.8mm at 400mm).

100mm (f/4.5, 1/40, ISO 400):

How far from the target were you in this test set-up?

Having a blast with this lens. I didn't mind the push pull while using the V1 but now using the rotating method I don't think I could go back. The AF is nice and zippy too.

For the AFMA I put the target about 3m from me. Probably too close, but it worked fine and it was clearly back focusing a very small amount. At farther distances, I don't think there's a real difference between 0 and -1.

At the minimum focus distance, the target was maybe 2.5 feet from the end of the lens. A little farther to focus at 400mm. It was hard to take the shots handheld.

There's also more color fringing at 100mm than I expected from a telephoto lens. But I think others are seeing this too?

No. I'm seeing some vignetting wide open but nothing approaching what I would call 'severe'. Have any sample pics?

I've not noticed ANY vignetting. I just went back through my photos from yesterday and I had one at 106mm and f/5.6. Granted, that's not wide open but it's pretty close and the image has zero vignetting. Likewise, I have several that I shot at 400mm f/5.6 and no vignetting there either. Here's the 400, 5.6 photo, NOT cropped:

Next time I'm out with the lens I'll try for some shots at 100mm and f/4.5. BTW, do you have a filter on your copy?

I took it out for another quick test this morning, and I am very satisfied with the results (on 70D). All were shot at 100mm, the first three are cropped, the last one was shot at MFD and uncropped.

Cyberdyne, I was hoping - seriously - for a review that said I can just hold on to my Version 1. But your review made it so much more difficult to ignore the Version 2.

The part that did it for me was the new lens's ability to work with a 1.4TC. Focussing quick. Dang....The version 1 is just disaster with 1.4TC.

Now,... I just need to convince myself that I have to wait a few years for the prices to drop! LOL....

OK at least a few months after the first shipment of lenses go out. I never buy first shipment of any new generation of lenses.

AWESOME review.

Hi Guys
Hope to get the 100-400L Mk2 sometime soon.

I have a 1.4X Mk2 extender - can anyone tell if it be ok on the new lens and what the difference is between the Mk2 extender and the later versions of the extender.
I was never very happy with it on the 100-400L Mk1 and have never really used it.

It's unlikely to be any better on the new lens.

Elsewhere on the forum I have read that there is not that much difference between the 1.4X II and III. I have not tried the II myself. The III works great with my 100-400mm II. Here is an example taken with the 100-400mm2 on the 7D2 with the 1.4XIII, hand-held, heavy crop (to 30% of the width).

Same with the moorhen, but about 50% of the width.
