BTW....Im finding the 5DSR and 100-400Mk2 IS combo is an absolute powehouse when it gets a subject locked on at 400mm from a medium distance. To my eyes its almost approaching the sharpness of primes.

Other great advantage of the Mk2 IS is I can handhold sharp at 400mm on the 5DSR at mid range shutter speeds (1/250 th sec) whereas I couldnt on my older Mk1 IS. This was mainly due to the fact the 5DSR's vast number of "on target pixels" meant I had to use more than 2-3x focal length on older Mk1 to get rid of camera shake and sometimes I just didnt have the light to go up in SS Now Im getting a couple of extra stops its increased my keepers by heaps although this shot doesnt demonstrate this as it was shot at a faster speed.

Ok, there's no logic to it, but this looks sharper and more detailed than anything I am used to seeing in this thread. Is it possible that even after all the web resizing etc, the 5Dsr is offering such superior overall detail?

The 100-400ii will go down in history as the greatest EOS lens. I say this having owned 400/5.6 and currently owning 300/2.8isii, 400DOii, and 500isii. When the 1DXii get's here it will be my first choice in wildlife/birding.

Tall tale... some would say the UWA or 200 F2 or 85 1.2 II type stuff.

Many lenses out there dood.

Just curious if anyone has experienced this I had the camera on my truck seat the other day when I grabbed it I moved the focus ring quite a bit when I went to focus it wouldn't I had to hit the focus button a few times it seemed like it was getting jammed . So I set up some soda cans set it on a tripod and focused no issues then I proceeded to unfocus it and the same thing happened it wants to focus but it's like its getting jammed. If I move the focus ring say a 1/4 turn it focuses fine if it goes further it takes a few times to get it to focus it doesn't matter if its in AI Servo or One Shot 100mm or 400mm.

I thought of this when I read it first as well, but I don't think it sounds right. John's description of being "jammed" does not sound like "not even trying" which is the behavior when you have "hunting" disabled.

I agree with MedicineMan. The 200mm is in/has been in the hands of so few, it and the 85 are so niche, that they are a different kind of beast all together. This 100-400mm is near perfect for so many jobs, it is the literal Swiss army knife, and it does it all so well. It has likely out sold the 200mm and 85mm combined by orders of magnitude in it's first year.

The greatest? 135 comes to mind.

Just too much to offer out there to be called greatest.

For a Canon ...

I use the 300 VR II on a D810 for macro and there's a lot more detail, and less noise, in my crop grabs than that ..

In the case of the Kite sharpness/detail I put it down to a few things coming together.

1. No AA filter in play( has AA Bypass) so will be sharper than a AA filter sensor and 50MP of detail captured will obviously add to this ....although downsampling will bin a lot of this detail...Thats the interesting part because in 5dsr case pixel pitch size is smaller but there are way more of them. So Im thinking the POTN downsampling whilst binning a lot of the detail is somehow able to use this detail to reconstruct a sharper more detailed lower resolution 1200 image

2. Superfast shutter speed of 1/3200... Too fast for even 5dsr shake to be evident

3. Aperture f9 not far from sweetspot which will probably give better sharpness than wider aperture settings

4. Absolutely No atmospheric impact between lens and subject as I was only 4 -5 meters max away ( using camo poncho allowed me to get very close and closer than I can normally get to these guys ).


Basically all the planets were aligned that day because its the sharpest I have personally got from this lens especially on a difficult to get close to subject like this
