EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Review WOW!

I just got the 100-400ii as a refurb and have been playing around with it. I've done some MFA adjustments, but I think they still need some tweaking. I focused on his eye and you can see where the depth of field is falling on the stone pretty well. I was getting some variance in the focusing, but that may be the 7dii. I still need to use it more to get a better feel.

I'm viewing on a small tablet, but assuming you were shooting slightly downward, it actually looks pretty darn close to spot on. His face is in a shadow so perhaps that is creating a perceived softness.

Not really showing off the lense, had it on a 1D Mk11 so the grain. I'm really having a good time finding different images with it.

Thank you. I normally end up with full body shots but they seem to be accepting me more of late and letting me get in tighter. They sit on the wires from about 3pm waiting for me to fill the feeder at around 4. As soon as I fill it up and turn my back to walk away, they're down on it! If I fill it up at 3, then it's empty by 4 and the lorikeets, which come in later, don't get a feed unless I refill butI can't stretch to that........... the bloody birds are costing me more to feed than my two dogs!

Haha yeah I know about the cost of feeding all the birds in the neighborhood! Sadly the squirrels and chipmunks are just as costly and the cost of their destruction I feel is worse. We have three hawks now working for us and have seen two squirrels taken by them this week but that's not enough. One of the hawks was seen with a rat taken a couple of days ago so every rodent possible is also coming for the buffet. What I need now are some owls to take close residence....working on that too.

What species is that? I'm not familiar with the birds in Australia. However I'd love to check them out!

I know Choder has a secret stash of Powerful Owls, so I'm guessing a juvenile powerful; but I thought young powerfuls were normally lighter in colour than that image.

It's a Southern Boobook. Smallest and most cute of the Australian owls. Almost certainly one of these three chicks I found in December last year:

Choder that is truly an amazing capture. To see that many owls at one time, hard to believe. It took me almost 2 years to amass four sightings!

I spent about 3 hours searching through the bush for that family after a report of their location. Walking back to the car after giving up for the day they were right beside the walking track I was on.
I found one of the parents a couple of weeks before. At night, got some reflection of the eyes from my torch, thought it was a possum but checked closer and discovered it was an owl.
I then watched it move around several trees in a fairly small area and it seemed very similar to what a Powerful owl does when it's near a nest hollow. The next day I went back to that area:

So pleased with this lens. I bought it as a replacement for my 50-500 Sigma, which produced tack sharp images but lacked stabilisation. A lot of money well spent!
