i don't want to say it should be sharper - but it should be sharper (my experience) - I am assuming this was handheld

No, it was off a sturdy tripod with a remote shutter release.

are you square to the fence?
did you use any sharpening?

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

And it's yellow on dark blue on my screen, which is calibrated.

I just did AF MA, using a sign across the street as a target, about 40 meters (130 ft) away. Looks good today, but I need to test it in a real world. Will it be able to get a sharp shot of a bird's feather?

Again, two shots, full and cropped. I think this time it should be fine. I cannot read the sign, and it looks yellow on black with naked eye, but I can see the bolts on the crop!

Honestly. That looks a bit off.

OT, but it's interesting that "off a tripod" means the same as "on a tripod".

English is my second language. I speak it for over 35 years, and still I find it amazing, e.g., things like slim chance and fat chance. :-)

I requested a repair service from Canon, will ship the camera/lens/TC there this week.

:-) I was not criticizing you, just commenting on the vagaries of the English language. Like "couldn't care less" means the same as "could care less". Yes, English is also my second language.

Good luck dealing with focus issues with Canon. -?

I did not take is criticizing at all, on the contrary, I really appreciated those comments of yours, regardless or irregardless... :-)
