I'm not trying to be aggressive/provocative, but surely an understanding of standard deviation and a claim that Canon is selling mis-calibrated gear are mutually exclusive?

If components and products will have some deviation from perfect then it's inevitable that a combination of two samples of gear (whose deviation combines unfavourably) may show a noticeable problem.

The only way to avoid that would be to have all samples rolling off the production line with a maximum deviation small enough that (for all practical purposes) every combination is perfect. But then the costs would go up hugely.

I did not take it that way and I stopped caring long ago. I get beat up a lot for my view on this but I won't change my mind. The work order said lens had to be calibrated so it was defective. That is pretty black and white to me. I worked in manufacturing for 35 years and you don't want know what goes on some days when it really hits the fan. It was much better by the time I retired because companies had to improve due to global competition.

I just remembered. I still have Ford's book on statistical process control. We used it to establish sampling methods. Interesting company that took that on before others in north America did.

Agree 100%
Ive sent in gear for issues and the work order always comes back saying they had to calibrate the lens/body.
To me that means either something was truly wrong with it and they fix it or they say this instead of "no issues found" as a way to keep customers from getting upset.

There was a big difference in the amount I had to MFA.

Actually I think they calibrate weather it needs it or not while it is in for servicing. The second time I guess they went further as they found a mis-calibrated board.

Definitely things do go wrong; I have a 70-200II that just wouldn't calibrate (get it right for one focusing distance, and it was way off as soon as the distance changed). I sent it to Canon and it was fixed.

I also had a bit of a saga with the 5D4 (I'm on my second body and it still needed to go into Canon to get my lenses working with it).

However, a general need for an occasional bit of MFA to get a particular lens and body working perfectly together isn't a by-product of a defective item; it's a by-product of sample variation.

It would be interesting to know how often people need to MFA when using some of Canon's uber expensive cinema lenses on their 'C' range of cameras. I would rather hope that the manufacturing tolerances are tighter, given the cost of the products.

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

I had to corp these quite a bit so not as crisp as I'd like them to be. I got a tip and I know where it lives. Gonna head back on a sunny day.

Just a seagull that liked to hang out on our deck. Something different about his eyes.

Jeff - what kind of bird is that? Never seen a small bird with so much white.

He's a black Cap Chickadee. He's leucistic. Lacking pigment
