Go Australia day! Nice sets. So you have only seen snow once :-) ?

The last shot. Based on that fellow diving or what it really looks like - falling head first into shallow water. Did he walk away from that one?

Australia Day looks like the 4th of July with a different flag.

Yes... Once when I was a litle kid.

Those kids were doing backflips. They were fine. They actually came over and asked why I was taking pictures, they were concerned I was going to report them to the police. LOL

I actually went out to photo some drunken yobbos..you know some cynical photos.. but I couldn't find any. I like the one of the girl kissing that dude, it's kinda sweet, and the complete opposite of what I was looking for.

Being Australia Day it should be feeding on lamingtons in Grevillea National Park!

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Australia Day Pics

I most definitely need to visit Australia. Looks like a fantastic time, just like our 4th of July!

Well got out to the Zoo for the first time with my 10 month old daughter Liberty Jane. This lens is absolutely the best Canon lens I have ever owned. I had the 7DII on an R strap, and the weight of the lens was perfect for everyday walk around use. Sorry for the coloring (for some reason my laptop seems off), or maybe I am just rusty. Also there were some areas of tough lighting due to being cloud here and there.

shooting small birds at 1/400 with the 1.4 T-con on the 100-400LII at 560mm can be done by some sometimes but walking around shooting like that you will get motion blur more often than not. I know its a nice small package but your reaching 560mm and shooting at 1/400. Yes we all do it but if your not floating that camera so as to cut down on your shake your gone get just what you see 90% of the time. and only if your IS is working for you. Grab a stick about 6 feet long and try and hold the other end completely still, bet ya can't do it. now think of the 30 foot stick your thinking you can do easily with every shot. big lenses on tripods are completely different animal. yes you can hand hold them both but motion blur is the killer of detail everytime, along with using servo..like we all do. we expect way more from our cameras than ever before and I think the branch has your focus so the birds eye is not as sharp as you would like but his wing and the branch are. That little point your seeing through the viewfinder is indeed way bigger than your thinking. I would have tried to walk the focus up through his head and pulled the trigger as I was leaving the bird completely and maybe 2 or 3 inches above him. which would have left the bottom edge of the focus on the top of his head. I shoot spot 99% of the time.

For instance... yes its cropped so you cant see the center point put holding on the yellow throat he's really at the back edge of the depth of field and focus is in front of him. I think most of our problems stem from this expectation of where the focus should be.

Now this is my take on this problem of getting focus where we want it. I know theres guys that can explain it so much better, but I'm just a shooter and take from my images what I can to get them to where I want them to be. The second image shows it can happen once in a while.

Couldnt agree more......Infact I was talking to a Canon Service guy the otherday regarding exactly same thing and his advice to me was that that when I start missing slightly on continuos AI servo its time to go back to one shot burst mode and see if that helps. Mind you thats aasier said than done especially when it comes to moving subjects but I do it regularly on still subjects and I certainly get a better keeper rate in one shot mode than I do in AI servo .

And a 100% right about the focus point. On 7DMk2 and 5DSR the std AF centre point covers way way larger area than it looks /than most people think and thats responsible for quite a lot of AF misses as it appears to be a back/front focusing issue when infact its just the AF point not being dead on the area that is chosen as AF point The AF focus point only needs tobe a fraction over half the spot away from the focus area it will then focus slightly off the point you think your on. Sometimes its better to choose the smaller micro AF point if you can put up with the slowdown of AF lock-on that the micro AF point sometimes gives ...

Its also a shame that Canon got rid of the lens F stop/distance scale on their lens when they went from FD mount to EF. Because if todays telephoto lens lstill had them people would see that by way of the scale even at F 5.6 /F8 the DOF on a 100- 400mm is still relatively narrow. Again easier said than done trying to shoot regularly at f8 and higher when these lens/camera body combos ( 5dsr, 7dMk2 and 100-400) require at least 1/1600 of a second or faster for handheld shots at the long end of the lens(400mm) . Basically as was said in a previous post when the 100-400 is used with bodies like 5ds/r and 7Dmk2 and is handheld it really needs good even light and very fast shutter speeds to ensure good IQ. In addition because of the smaller and denser pixel configurations these bodies sensors other IQ impacts like atmosherics etc etc will show up more on a these sensors than say a 1dx or any other full frame sensor with a lower pixel count.

As Ive said in a previous post the 5DSR I shoot with now is probably the most unforgiving camera I have ever ever shot with. When handheld the lkeepers are way lower than I have ever experienced however as I learn better what conditions I need for optimum performance ( Good bright light but not harsh, fast shutter speeds, and narrower aperture settings etc) its getting better.

ANyway I compare this with Golf. Its that one cracker shot (in amongst all my normal slice and hook shots) that keeps me going back for more!!! :)
