On one hand, photographing birds is a continual challenge to get the best shot of a particular bird in great light against a pleasing background, posing just right.

On the other hand, it's provides hours and hours for serenity, calm, and introspective thoughts as you sit and wait for everything mentioned above to come together. Sort of like fishing :)

Some days it's highly rewarding when you score that one shot that gives you that warm and fuzzy... the days that you don't get any winners you can file away as "recon" for your next outing.

They wade slowly, but the head is sweeping briskly from side to side in the water. If you want a picture with the bill out of the water, you have to wait for a moment when they look up, and that is often just brief.
