Nothing is perfect though! Much as I like my 100-400 Mk2 I really miss the "Trombone" zoom of the Mk1. This was much faster and more intuitive also the twist zoom of the Mk2 means that your left hand has to stay in one place - bad for balance. )

Mine zooms both "trombone" and the 'twist' too, I know that people mentioned that they didn't have the zoom on theirs, but mine does, I can't say that it always did, but it does now. No creep either...

Yes they can be push-pull zoomed but I was concerned about wear and tear. I believe some of the Sigma lenses are designed with this in mind but I don't think the Canon is - though I could well be wrong!

I don't know either, it can be done, but really, I use it the 'twist' method, although on my old 100-400m vI I loved the "trombone" method, I guess I just do what I am told. :)
I have done it, and if it does it on its own I guess it's O.K. as far as not damaging it, or, hopefully so.

I twist it, but once set at 400mm, it usually stays there for the duration of the session. So the zoom mechanism isn't much of an issue if you practically always shoot it fully extended.

I 'usually' have mine set at 400mm too, but it all depends on what I am shooting too. We're all different. :)

That is why if Canon had of offered a 400 5.6 IS II I would have purchased it instead of the 100-400. I shot for 8 years with my 300L F4 IS and never missed having a zoom. I had other lenses for that.

Aside from that Jake once about how he missed the push pull using his Mark 1. I still to date am not doing too well trying to zoom when shooting BIF. I keep trying but just have not found it feeling natural yet.

Zooming while Biffing seems very advanced to me! I think I have only tried that once or twice, mostly by accident.

Well, spring has finally reached the northeast. Saw this guy (or girl?) swimming in a nearby pond. Shot at 400 mm plus the canon 1.4x.

That's a lot of reach for one of them. Around here, at least without the water, I could get that shot with a fisheye lens mounted on my car bumper. Lol.

It was easy, almost instinctual on the old trombone.

I played one in the high school band. My favourite part was when we got a substitute we all switched instruments :-)
