I understand completely about it "making you feel better and improves my experience." My problem isn't with the people replacing the foot. My problem is with Canon not including a foot that already instills confidence for that kind of $$$$$!!

You may want to add something unique to an already expensive car but you shouldn't have to replace the tires. :p

To be clear, I never experienced a problem with the thumbscrew arrangement. I wanted the convenience of the dovetail plate. That said it's too bad Canon doesn't offer an alternate foot, or include one for the hefty price they charge!

I never had an issue with the original foot either. I connected a 5" RRS rail plate to the foot so I could use the Arca clamp. I just decided to clean it up a bit.

I don't think anyone had issues with the mount ring itself. It was the base mount plate. The four little screws came loose on some lenses and people had trouble keeping them tight and eventually they stripped. No foot manufacturer could solve that problem as it had nothing to do with that part.

Well I don't remember reading about mount ring issues anywhere. There may have been is I really can't say for sure.

That's a great shot. Love the detail in the feathers.

Thanks!

I'm fine with the Canon foot. It doesn't get used that much anyway, because I usually hand-hold. But sometimes I use a monopod, and the OEM foot works fine for that. I'm happy the original foot isn't heavier and costlier to make than it is. I'm also happy for those who like to customize. :-)

Even when I was using the OEM it was always on. When hand holding (then and now) I turn it to around 11 O'clock and use it as a support with my thumb. It does not do very much but feels like it's more secure. Might as well do something with it. It does not fit in the bag when it is pointing down.

I just came home from a wildlife preserve having the same equipment - 5DIV, 100-400L II, and 1.4x III. I was shooting both with and without the TC. Time to upload and check what I got.

Here's a prime example of why I feel that the 100-400 II is the BEST in Canon's lineup. What other lens allows you the versatility of shooting macro-esque one second, and then turn around and take on bird photography the next? And as a bonus it returns superb image quality.

These aren't award winning shots by any means, as I was out to fine tune MFA, and was pulling the trigger on anything I came across :-)

Possibly NSFW...

MFIF (mating flies in flight).
