Yeah, this lens is on my MVL list, along with my 35/2 IS (which I need to shoot more). Like you, it put my 70-300L in the corner.

Of coarse I was expecting the higher magnification but I swear it's all around sharper than the 70-300 was. I just can't see goin' back. I've been seeing a lot of posts using the 1.4 III TC (@560MM) so I went by a used equipment buyer today and parted with my 70-300L. They had a 1.4 III TC rated excellent+ in stock so they gave me that and some cash. My test shots at home look pretty good. Gonna take it to the gorge tomorrow and get some images of the peregrine nest. Saw mom feeding four big down balls a couple weeks ago. my 70-300 didn't have the reach but now I have nearly double. I'll post pic's if I get any.

Did some quick comparisons with and without the TC. No PP except to crop to approximately the same size image.

You might want to bump the shutter speed with the TC on. Yes, the IS is very good on this lens, but a little more SS never hurt, especially with that much headroom in the ISO department. I just picked up a used 100-400 II to replace my v1 and can't wait to get a 1.4x TC III. I've shot that combination before with a borrowed lens and a rented TC. I suspect the TC may rarely leave the lens.

Wonder if stopping the lens down a stop on the shots without the TC to get the same exposure would have produced better results. As they are the TC definately made better images than cropping the images shot without the TC.

Certainly comparing them at the same exposure would help in my view.

Travelling Japan at moment and have a couple of captures to share of the snow monkeys that populate the area around Yamanouchi. Summer there now so no icicles or snow in their hair or steam rising from the hot springs however still coming down from the mountains each day to take a dip and fool around as all monkeys do.....
