You might want to bump the shutter speed with the TC on. Yes, the IS is very good on this lens, but a little more SS never hurt, especially with that much headroom in the ISO department. I just picked up a used 100-400 II to replace my v1 and can't wait to get a 1.4x TC III. I've shot that combination before with a borrowed lens and a rented TC. I suspect the TC may rarely leave the lens.

I've found middle of the day for birds in flight to end up at ISO640-800 @ F8 with the 1.4xIII... generally that puts the shutter around 1/1000-1/2000 in most situations. Works great on the MKIV.

Num num num!!!!

The Osprey have been out in full force as of late!!! I've had most luck on clear days with the sun directly over head. Maybe that's what they prefer?

What makes you think it would need to be twice as big as a 1200mm, The Sigma can do 600mm in a lens a bit bigger than a 100-400mm ?? Ok so I did forget about the f2 part of my problem.. but thats up to the geniuses of the world... Not me. I just do the wanting

I'm going to try a firmware upgrade and see if that works. Thanks for the reply.

FWIW, I was never happy for moving objects with just a single center point f8 option on the mkIII, the MKIV finally just makes it more realistic especially having a cluster of points around the center as I'm terrible at keeping a bird at close range right in the center.

For static images, one center point generally did okay on the MKIII, but there were def more moments where I wanted to punt the camera into the river!

Well after a little more reading found out that the 1.4 extender is not compatible with the 6d. I'm pissed to say the least.

As far as I understand, the issue is just that the 6D cannot AF with a lens combination that's smaller than f/5.6 (which would cover the 100-400II with a TC). It's really only been high end bodies that could do it (1D series, 5DIII), and it's only now expanding in both quality (all points for the 1Dx2 and 5DIV), and down the range (e.g. the 80D).

Point being: it's not that the 6D is bad, it's just that it wasn't a "pro" body in it's era. Even the 5DIII didn't have it at launch; though the hardware was obviously capable (with a firmware update).

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

Just admit that it was not only 800 mm, but it was also a heavy crop! :-)

lol the joke is Lbsimon there is no 300-800mm, while there is a crop there they were way way way way way out there. Just my twisted humour... I was lucky to get even a "look what I saw" shot like these two.

Psst: The joke was about a 300-800 f/2. ;) Would look like the barrel on a battleship's main gun. But be awesome.

I know....just joking around. I met a guy who owns this lens while shooting eagles. Checked his website later and not that impressed with IQ.

It would look like a battleship's gun. Not to mention UNAFFORDABLE!!!
