So, dumb question... why does it say "focus distance between 81.91m and 559.79m"? Doesn't it know much more precisely than that what distance the lens is focused at?

Thats a good question.

The metadata in the file isn't very specific with focus distances (at least for larger values anyway). Some years ago I had an idea to write an image processing application that used the focus distance but found that the data just wasn't accurate enough for the job.

I don't know if the camera actually knows what the focus distance is. Part of me suspects it's just changing focus on the lens until it gets the image sharp (or rather "aligned", for phase AF).

Maybe it ( it being the camera / lens ) does know the exact distance that relates to the position the lens has moved to achieve focus, but it does not release that data to the interface that stores the data the plug in reads.

Just like focus assist points that may or may not be in use, or the apparent activation points that do not appear to be in the plane of focus, I am pretty sure that some of the information shown in the plugin is a result of interpretation and not the actual data coming from the camera.

Well sure, but if DPP can only tell you the focal distance give or take a couple of football fields, at a range of a couple of football fields, why even include the information in the display?

Ok. So wouldn't that change with the F stop.. Now I have to go out and run some experiments.

I'm heading to the US Virgin Islands next week, and am heavily considering taking this lens (along with my usual 16-35 f/4 and 50L). Probably won't because it'll be super heavy, but if there's a chance of nice wildlife opportunities, I'm willing to shoulder the burden (pun intended). Anyone been to USVI and can comment on whether it's worth taking this lens?

The f-stop will affect the depth of field, but wouldn't change the focal plane. Well, apart from on lenses where it does (some lenses exhibit minor focus shift on stopping down: https://photographylif​e.com/what-is-focus-shift/)

true John, There was a time I would simply go get what I wanted. Now I have a dozen other people ( kids grand children ) and 200 other reason's that need it now.

All three cub's accounted for tonight.
