Just wait til you get the MKIV + MKIII extender. Even better especially with moving objects/bif.

Congrats on getting the shots at last! These are some crispy, detailed photos!

Appreciate it! I honestly think this hobby comes down to luck/time in the field/observation skills/eliminating distractions than the actual camera equipment. I've noticed a number of birds will come back to the same spots over and over, so that helps a ton!

A LOT of time and luck, for sure!!! Finding a bird, in a spot where you have good light, getting bird into that light, on a good perch. Sometimes I sit there staring at an amazing perch/light, and attempt to force-of-will a bird to land there :D

Finally got a chance to try the 2xIII teleconverter with this lens this past weekend at the Dayton airshow. Both of these at maximum zoom (400mm and 800mm respectively). Both originally shot in RAW, neutral picture style. Converted to JPEG and standard picture style with DPP with default settings. No other editting performed except for resizing.

For pixel peepers, 100% crops of the above shown here....

For me, the performance is acceptable with the 2xIII. Could be cleaned up better in post for those "must have" shots.

Another example with the 2xIII for a full 800mm shot.
Cleaned up a bit more in post. Uncropped.

At this distance, I can still see the scar on this solder's chin.

No teleconverter for this one.

This lens was the perfect lens to take to this event.

Happened across a field of Tree Swallows this week while on vacation. Still had my 100-400mm so it was a perfect opportunity to try out some BIFs with the 5DIV.

Quick edits of two different sequences. While I missed the 7DII's higher shooting rate at times, the 5DIV did surprisingly well with the 100-400mm. Loads of keepers with this combo.

Very nice.

I am finding that though the 7D2 FPS is missed, it is made up for with the 5D4's superior AF, particularly with t-Cons.

So I assume it was all manual focus?

Thanks!
Although I've only been out once with each combo for BIFs, I tend to agree with you. I will need much more in-field comparison shooting to come to a firm conclusion on this.

First shot (without the TC) is with AF.
Second shot with MF.

A male Powerful owl. One eye was damaged earlier this year. Good to see him still doing well. His partner is nearby in their nest hollow meaning he is still capable of acquiring enough food for the whole family.
