A five hour (or more) game of chess is as physically demanding as many athletic sports. Measurements of heart rates and other parameters have shown that.
It requires a lot of training too, mental and physical. - So yes, it is considered a sport.

I... don't recall stating anything to do with heart rate. Or training. I don't recall saying chess was easy, in fact. That's all orthogonal to "sport". But I'm going to disengage on this.

The mighty USS Ronald Reagan is currently docked in Brisbane after joint exercises in N Qld. These were taken from the other side of the river, up to my ankles in mud...

Sadly, these images do not do her justice - she is an absolute behemoth. Some 3,000-4,000 US Service personnel are currently enjoying the sunny Qld climate - they've had stunning clear blue skies and abundant sunshine all week!

We just had this conversation at work, and concluded that a "sport" is when you have 2 or more competitors, competing in an event where your actions directly affect the opponent's/vice-a-versa. Soccer, tennis, basketball, chess: examples of sports. Golf, speed cup stacking, most Olympic field events, rowing: examples of non-sports.

Were these taken today or yesterday Dennis? I was out there taking some shots between about 2 and 3pm yesterday (Wednesday) and was surprised how many people were there... had to settle for 200mm on my full-frame 6D, so not as good as yours! (but I do have a 12 image pano of the whole ship, which is 16615 x 5242 pixels!)

Taken today between 3:30pm and 4:30pm after wading through a few stretches of muddy foreshore, stinky stuff it was.

Like you, I also shot a pano in portrait mode (using the 70-200mm at the 200mm end) and it has scrubbed up a treat. It measure 25,942 x 5,934 pixels.

Should have thought about the time when I took mine. Think I took them from the same spot as yourself but I went in the morning and this side of the ship was in shadow which resulted in blue cast that my limited PS skills couldn't shift without resulting in much noise.

I used the convertor and couldn't crop more due to noise, so I'm guessing that your images were more favoured by the light and are big crops?

Yes - having the Sun behind me really helped with these and I was able to shoot at ISO100 but bumped it up to ISO400 with the 100-400mm Mk II and Canon Extender EF x1.4 II fitted.

Here are a couple of full res crops with faces and names blurred.

i had a similar conversation; my definition of a "sport" is where the outcome is directly related to the level of fitness/strength of the competitors, which has an input on the result. i.e. soccer, sport. tennis, sport. if you are faster or stronger than your opponent, then you should win. golf, not a sport. chess, not a sport. these are skills based games. if you get stressed (increased heart rate/respiration) playing these games, then you need to take up a sport to increase your fitness.
