Looks like we're going to have to part. It's got to the stage where I can only hold the 7Dmkll combo up for a few seconds and the GP is telling me that I'm not doing my bursitis any favour., What makes it worse is that I've just bought a metabones to use it on m43 but even that is too much as he says I shouldn't be lifting above chest height atm. Jeeez it's only 2.7kilos with the extender and I can remember a time that seems not so long ago, that I could lift 25k's with my left hand!...............you're old before you know it so live life to the full folks.

O my god Kev.. get a new GP... and keep moving is my plan for life.

O my god Kev.. get a new GP... and keep moving is my plan for life.

That's what I thought Jeff. I did all the right things. I walked 11ks every morning and again in the evening. Hadn't smoked for 14 yrs. Ex military so looked after myself, and then told I needed the bypass due to "hereditary cholesterol". Continued to look after myself after that and then got took with an abdominal aortic aneurism. Apparently very few survive outside a hospital setting if it ruptures, as you bleed out in a matter of seconds. The normal size is around 2cms mine was 6.3 with no symptoms and was only discovered with the annual check on my bypass.............so, I decided that my card was already marked and one of the first things I did coming out of hospital, was to have a ciggy...............let it all hangout...............life's not about how long you live but how you live it

I reckon that this combo took me places I wouldn't go., spiritually, mentally blah blah. First time I've ever been (almost) totally happy with what I was producing. I'll still go there with the m43 kit and I know I'll bemoan the loss of IQ, but if I struggle to hold the combo steady, what's the point of hanging onto it and being reminded that my body's fecked, and letting that detract from what I love doing?.............just being out there!

words of wisdom Kev!!! It's sad to hear this for you, it has to be completly frustrating . Can you use a monopod or a tripod?

Cheers,

So sorry to hear this. I can't imagine the disappointment. I vote for the mono-pod. No need to part though, you have a lot of experience to share.

Tried. Mostly use it for birding and they're so skittish in the rainforest that they're gone before I can move a ball joint. Again, that's just extra weight, Although I did use it as a terkking pole and it helped me uphill :-)

Bid, I'm also sorry to hear that.... I've been having some health issues of my own but I think I'm on the mend, though my stuff is also chronic. no one gets off the planet alive.. so we have to make the best use of our time here, as you suggested.

I've weighed it all up Joe and it's about mobility. I shoot on the move mainly, or sometimes I just sit and wait in camo clothing with a face scrim. But the few opportunities now afforded by the latter can't justify me sitting on the money that the sale could afford me to invest in m43. I could manage it if I could use a hide but it is so hot/humid in Queensland, you're lucky if you can spend 10 minutes in a hide or even with the scrim on your face. I've struggled for a while now as my lack of recent posts may show. I've had a few 3 day trips and come back with practically nothing, (you only see the keepers) even with the excellent IS of this lens. My only recent shots are with it on a monopod but I just can't get used to shooting like that. It seems rather "clinical" IYKWIM? Jeff probably does. I like "shooting from the hip" and I'm even ready for a hip replacement as well :-)

I have mates who've sat in an office all their lives who are fitter than me. I tell ya! All my ex military buddies who served longer than me are all carking it before me. Being in the military may keep you fit whilst in there, but long term, as a 22 yr career, what does it do to your body as you age? I'm a strong believer in "roots" as hunter gatherers we ain't made to carry weight.

Live what you can ... Shoot what ever you want.. you've been a great long distance friend. proud to know you.

Wow this one almost jumps out and bites you!

Yeah it was very cooperative, and they enjoy the sun/heat on gravel roads, so you usually will find 'em hangin out in those parts.

Gotta love the MFD of the 100-400 II!!!

I have that problem with guitars ;)

Thanks all for the useful feedback on the lens + crop bodies. Time to stare at my bank account...

It works amazing on my 70d. I just sold my 5div as using an F8 setup just want's worth it compared to bare lens on a crop body with no 1.4xiii.

I believe any improvement from here means: 500F4 II or V1 as the next logical step. This is my conclusion after using the 5dIV 72000 shots over the past year with an extender = great for perched, not so great with confusing backrounds

I'm prepared to bet that the majority of those reports are from folk who have very little idea as to how long lenses can compress moisture/heat/haze in the atmosphere. Nothing to do with the lens and more about their lack of knowledge of compression.

Interesting that the same folks suddenly improved their knowledge of long lenses when they moved to FF...

DO NOT! This lens was MADE for the 7D2! I’ve never had a better combo, and I’ve had a lot of combos. There is no systemic problem with this pair...

I had a great experience with the 7D2 and this lens. The problem was only when using it in a combination with the 1.4x TC, both II and III, it was not sharp enough.

I am having even better experience with this lens when using it with the 5D4, though... :-)
