However as you all know, we are almost always at 400mm.

Indeed. It is not a big deal whether it's a push-pull or twist if you are almost always racked out.

Agree completely re; push pull. It would be great to find a way to combine the two ;)

I can feel air on my chin when I go from 400 to 100 on my version II

Powerful owls. Male on the left feeding the female on the right. She's due to go into the hollow to start brooding any day and will only be out for 15 - 20 minutes each day for 6-7 weeks.

Nonsense: it's fabulous! :-) The clarity and separation of the colours gives this a special quality.

This doesn't sound right at all. Even when mine was right out of the box everything moved fairly easily. I can reach up with my pinkie and turn the focus ring.

My ring is great! (yeah, I hear it)
Can't fault it, tightened, barrel won't move. Loosened, barrel moves very easily. It's also easy to set anywhere in between.
I got lucky though. Just on the feedback over years in this thread, there seems to be quite some variation in the tension ring, from not tightening enough to not loose enough.

Mine works exactly as you described.

Mine too. Loose it can slid out just by tipping the lens down.. Tightened you cant move it. I would say works as it should.
