just recently purchased a ef 100-400f/4.5-5.6L IS II....was thinking about picking up a Canon 2xII extender. Is this going to be a workable solution. Have a 1.4 (Tokina teleplus pro 300) but would like to see what the 2x II can do with this lens if it is doable and can continue to get sharp images....

all thoughts and suggestions are welcome...

thanks

john

John, I'd definitely say, "stay with the 1.4 TC, and don't get the 2X II. I can almost guarantee you won't be happy with it. I've tried my Canon 2X III TC on mine, and was not happy with image quality, plus I loose two f stops (have to shoot at f/11). I also have to manually focus with both the 7D mkII and 5D mkIV. My 1.4X TC III, does a great job, but my widest aperture is f/8 (I can live with that), and I can't use all my focus points. Only the single point focus, and the single point assist will work with the 1.4 TC III.

Since I like to shoot BIF, I rarely us a TC, but for static shots, it can be great.

My stupid blunder....Yes I can use all the focus points. Sorry for the misinformation.

I thought the 5D4 could use more than one AF point at f/8.

It will use the single point, plus the single point with 4 assist points, and the single point with 8 assist points. That gives you a total of 3 choices. On my camera, it does not work with the others... large zone selection points (where points continually switch).

With my 5D4 + 1.4x III + 100-400 II, I can use all the focus points (I just tested it). According to the 5D4 manual, the 1.4x has to be version III to get all the points.

Do you have all AF points selectable on the body or just the cross-type?

Wow, it seems that I've got a problem. I'll try it again, and check for any camera firmware updates. Thanks for the information.

I can select any one of the 61 points to use as a single focus point.

EDIT: I can move around any type of focus group up to the group of 9 boxes. I can move the group anywhere within the 61 points.

I agree with Mike that you don't want the 2x. The 1.4x III is great with the 100-400 II if you have a body that auto focuses at f/8.

Much to my embarrassment,  I not have all the AF points selected. I almost always use the single focus point and also the single with the focus assist points. Sorry for the screw-up.

My stupid blunder....Yes I can use all the focus points. Sorry for the misinformation.

You won't have AF with the 2X.

The 5D4 will get all AF points with a 2X provided you have an F4 or faster lens.

I was not smart enough to stay indoors. Went to the local air show. With the Humidex it got to 43 Celsius (109 F). Wind gusts were up to 60 kil (37 mph). It was tough shooting. The wind was blowing me around.
