And a new category is born right here: MIF = Mosquito In Flight. I am 100% sure I have not pulled that one off....

Cheers.

Well if you really have to start a mosquito flying thread....

Foxes were the bait..

First of all: Those foxes are too cute. Love it.
Second: Those mosquitos - I think you need to practice that a bit more. You gotta get closer - don't get bitten though. They are nasty buggers...

Cheers.

They say every creature has a purpose but come on, the mosquito? Can't the frogs find something else to eat? Please?

A bit of trivia:
Not long ago I was watching "The Nature of Things" and the show was about the high arctic and the animals that live there. A caribou can loose up to half a litre of blood a day to the lowly little mosquito. That is a lot of mosquito bites.

Now, back k to our regular programming.

If those caribou would live in Florida, they would have been instinct long time ago...

Cheers.

Good morning all. I look at all the pics here and wonder how many are hand held as opposed to tripod mounted. If you use a tripod do you disable the IS?
Most of my previous bird pics are tripod mounted with the IS off. My point is this - I seem to get roughly the same amount of sharpness hand held as as tripod mounted. This is also my conclusion from the shipping pics I take. Now, is the IS that good?
(Note: I see there is a new 70-200 f4 being released with 5 stop stabilisation)

No tripod, unless I'm shooting night scenes.

I do not use a tripod with the 100-400 lens. The only time I use a tripod is when I'm shooting with a lens that is just to heavy for me to hand hold successfully (such as my Canon 500).

Another vote for no tripod. Most of my wildlife shots are taken while hiking or biking and I want the flexibility to move about for the best camera angle under the circumstances. I've gone as low as 1/25th of a second handheld with acceptable (to me) sharpness. I try to release the shutter similar to how I use increasing pressure on the trigger for precision target shooting, causing as little disturbance as possible at the time the shot is taken.

I cannot imagine trying to shoot birds in flight with a tripod hanging off the bottom of my camera. Kind of like trying to run with a bowling ball tied to one ankle.

I know....I know.....'use a gimbal...'. Still, too restrictive. The more you do this, the better you will become.

No tripod for me, thanks.
