I almost find it beyond belief that we can use these slow speeds on a 400mm lens. I find it's worth the cost just for that alone!

7D2. Hand held, 1/40 @400 which was never an issue around the house before I sent it in. Still gotta get out there on sunny day. Finally the last two were nice but I was loaded with other commitments.

Wow is right. It is going to live on this cam so if can get this out there I'm back in business.

I hate to use the term "Game Changer" as it gets over used, but coming from all my 1st and 2nd gen IS lenses, this IS is indeed a game changer.

400mm f/5.6, 1/6th of a second, ISO 1600 and of course, handheld.
This is on a shelf some feet away and above my head.

Full image scaled down to fit here,

100% crop of above, And I just finally figured out how to embed the original with no compression from host. Click eyeglasses to see it.

You can see bits of dust/sand form Wednesday beach trip that I did not see with the naked eye when I put it away.

1/6th of a second!

I think game changer is pretty close. IQ is more impressive than I expected. I think I'll keep it.

The verdict is pretty good. I actually wanted to read the PZ review before purchasing but I took a chance and I'm glad I did.

I must say, I am not pleased with Canon on the FF big sensor front.

But you have to hand it to them their 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM II is superb, and now the new 100-400 L IS USM II looks truly iconic. :) :)

Actually add the 1.4 telecon III and it makes their new 200-400 L look wildly overpriced, simply because this lens appears to be so good!

Please suffer my ignorance, but when you say 400% or 700% crop exactly what does that mean? I am aware of 100% crop of course, but are you saying you have blown up the image 7x past 100% crop?

So how does one go about a 100% crop in LR and uploading to the forum?

That lens looks really good. When I was first looking for a lens it was between the 400 5.6, the 100-400 V1 and the 300L F4 IS.

The 400 5.6 and no IS and the reviews about the 100-400 V1 said soft at 400 so I settled for the 300. There was not as much forum activity back than however over the years I had seen so much nice work come out of the 100-400 @ 400 I wondered about those reviews.

The lens rentals comparisons were a bit surprising but after seeing the shots posted here and that set at FM I'm pretty impressed and I think it will do a good job. I'm really looking forward to the advanced IS.

The postman was at the door as I was writing this.

Did he ring twice? ;-)a

So how does one go about a 100% crop in LR and uploading to the forum?

All a 100% crop is, is an crop of an image taken when the image is set to 100% size on your screen, that is small enough to fit on others screens as well when viewed at 100%

If your image is 3500x2400 pixels and you post the whole thing here @ 1280x1024, it is not being shown at 100%. It is being reduced in size a lot.

However, if you crop a section of detail in that image, say to 1000x800 pixels, this can be displayed at full on the forum. As in the case of the 1D image, that 2nd image "crop" is 100% view. Pixel for pixel view. The first image that is not a crop can;t fit on your or my screen, so it's been reduced in size throwing out lots of pixels worth of detail.

Good explanation here;

1/6th of a second!

That pretty much just convinces me even more that selling my 70-200 and 400 for it is the right decision!
Wow, now I will be able to pull off some sweet night panning shots at the airport.

I'm impressed with the ultra slow shutter speed, but I don't expect to shoot wildlife with that low unless as a pan. I'm curious; at 400mm, at what shutter speed will this IS capability be of little to no value? In the old days I often heard it was similar to the old one over MM guideline.
