A member's tally of Likes can be informative. Suppose you're new here and you ask a question. Your question is answered first by Person A and next by Person B, who gives the opposite answer. Person A has 200 posts and 30 Likes. Person B has 10,000 posts and no Likes. Whom are you going to trust?

As tandemhearts said, a Like can replace a "+1." It saves a post that way: less scrolling, less time spent. It can also replace a post that says nothing but "Nice shot," and those are numerous.

I like the like button because it is an efficient way to express approval or appreciation for a post. I find it a better method than say posts that just say "+1". ....

OK, you have a point, and I hear what everybody is saying. Having opted out of Facebook and a flood of rather meaningless "likes" and "friends" there, I was just rather surprised to see something similar appearing on AMASS, but I can see I should in future start showing some appreciation for the often excellent and informative posts here.

Now this is a post I can like, so I did.

Yes, we need the likes. It provided feedback to members that try to contribute, and they can see which things garner the most appreciation so they know to deliver more of that content in the future.

Another large forum I'm on switched from vBulletin to XenForo software a couple of years ago and "Like" for a message was one of the new features. It was slow to catch on, but gradually became accepted and is widely used now. It replaced a lot of "+1" or thumbsup posts making the threads less cluttered.

I like LIKE.
But I have some suggestions for improvements:

1) Make it less verbose.
E.g. Just print "(1)" instead of "(one other does, too)".

2) Rename it "+1".

3) Add a "-1" i.e. "UNLIKE"

4) Add a quick posts sort option to switch posts order between date and most liked, so I can avoid reading all 200 pages of a thread to get a statistically good answer ;)

Keep on the good work !

I would 'like' this post except that I think the whole idea of 'likes' bites the big one.

Think about this...

OK, let us assume that 1000 read a post, and 100 of the readers Like it...but at the same time 700 of them have 'no opinion' and 200 are in staunch DISagreement with the statements made...

Presumably at least one of those 200 will be so incensed as to feel they have to post a reply expressing their disagreement. In that case the other 199 can 'like' that post. Now we can easily see that the 'Nays' outnumber the 'Yeahs'.

How is a "like" any different from a post that says "+1" or "Nice shot." or "very nice"? It serves to express an appreciation for the post without bumping the thread.

It's useful for the same reason when it replaces "LOL" or "I agree." Opening a thread because it has a new post, only to find that the new post is "LOL," does nothing for me. A Like is a less conspicuous communication; you don't have to open the thread or scroll past the post.

I wanted to "like" your post. But, just couldn't.

So we really need to 1-up facebook and add a DISLIKE IMMENSELY you IDI0T button.
