the 150-500OS is a good lens, and it's a good bang for the buck if you need reach on the cheap...it can be had below your budget for sure if you're willing to buy used...a new copy right now is only 870...and that would come with a 4 year warranty...i think you'll have to wait quite a bit before the sellers of the 100-400L are going to realize their copies aren't going to be selling for $900+ and have to drop the price...so it'll probably stay out of your budget for a bit

personally i don't see why you'd go for the 120-400OS over the 150-500OS...prices are about the same

The 120-400 is a stop faster than the 150-500 at 400mm, it is sharper at 400mm (please see http://www.the-digital-picture.com …mp=0&FLIComp=4&APIComp=2) (external link), a little lighter.

I am going to keep an eye out for a good deal on a used or maybe new,,Sigma 150-500..wish there was a store close by that stocked lens ??175 miles to a so-so camera shop ?? one disadvantage of living in the sticks..but who in the city has deer, bear, fox, coyotes ect in there back yard??
Thats why i am on here asking the ??s
Keep the ideas comeing Please.. i will be useing the tele on a Canon 7D,40D and maybe on her little SL1...if that helps ?

100-400 L, people are unloading them for the vII now, but it's still a good lens.

This industry standard lens is now the big bargain on the used market. I'd go this way. Did in fact and stuck with it for many years!

its 2/3 of a stop...here's another comparison of the two sigmas, and the 100-400L, along with the old bigma...the difference in IQ between the two isn't huge in my mind...

Of course it is not a full stop, I realized my mistake after having a glass of Sam Adams... :-). It is actually 1/3, 5.6 vs. 6.3. But I still like the sharpness of 120-400 vs. 150-500, but it is, of course, subjective.

The only factor that stops me from getting the "old" 100-400L is that it has supposedly "outdated" IS, vs. more modern Sigma's OS. But having no experience with the 100-400 I do not know how much the difference is.

ha...i blame mine on a weeks worth of mexican beer, and tequila slowly draining out of my system

they're both good deals when you want reach for cheap

-?I see your point about the 120-400 sigma haveing a 2/3 stop faster lens,,but don,t under stand how it would be sharper at 400mm,,??brighter yes ,but sharper ??
Used i am not seeing much difference in price between the Sigmas 120-400 vs 150-500..but both are in my price range...
the 400 is a little lighter and smaller than the 500,,but neither are light weights?? nor is the Canon 100-400 IS??

Its about come down to a coin flip??and what i can find the best deal on??
Wheren can i find pics taken with the 3 lens,,so i can compare??
Thanks

Hmmm. From what I've been reading the 100-400 MkII may well prove otherwise.

I've heard that from several lately.

Interesting. I may reconsider my 400 5.6.

Too many interesting ($$$) possibilities.
