I looked for a thread on this, but could not find one. Sorry if I'm repeating.

I've been suspending judgment on the claims that the Sony sensor is better than anything Canon has to offer. It now appears to be the official word. DPreview gave the camera a good review, but only a silver award. They cited as one of the reasons that the sensor is not up to the competition. Not so good for a camera positioned as the top of the line APS-C SLR from Canon. I get the impression that Canon knew that their sensor technology was not up to snuff. So they loaded up the camera with other stuff. Not that I'm complaining about the other stuff. And there's little doubt that the camera will give me better quality images than what I have now. But it's not driving me into a frenzy of desire that I must have it now. So I'll hold on to my current stuff for a while longer. I'm not about to jump ship. It's disappointing that Canon was on the cutting edge for a few years and they rested on their laurels while Sony steamed ahead.

I may be wrong, but I suspect that Canon has so much money tied up in their oun sensor production that they can't afford to drop it and get someone like Sony to do it for them. It could also be that Sony's connection with Nikon is too strong. At any rate, the DR comparison is an eye opener... unfortunately.
