Just bought a 35mm, now things are getting redundant. What would you do?

So here's what I have, other than a mild case of GAS:

  • 6D & T4i bodies
  • 17-40L
  • 35mm f2 is
  • 40mm f2.8
  • 50mm f1.4
  • 85mm f1.8
  • 24-105L
  • 55-250 f4-5.6 STM

I don't have the 35 yet...it's on its way to me :-). I guess the obvious is to ditch the 40 and 50. I may hold onto the 50 for a while to see if it gets any use once the 35 arrives. That's probably what I'm having the most trouble with. Does anyone own a 35 and 50 and find that they use both often enough to justify keeping both? I could probably sell the 40, 50 and 55-250 to pick up a 135L. I'm not sure that I would miss the reach.

I mostly photograph people and outdoor portraits. Occasionally I do some event work and I love landscapes, but I don't shoot them as often as I'd like to.

Thanks for any input. I just needed to get this written down, I think .

Seems like a pretty good move to me. With the 135L on the crop body will give you the reach; maybe a 200L 2.8 if you need more reach ;)

I'm shuffling lenses around as well. I'm about to get a 35 f/2 IS and I think I'm going to keep the Sigma 50. Even though they are close in focal length, I have different uses for them. I'd ditch the 40, and keep the 50. If you find you don't use the 50 anymore then I would sell it.

I'd just keep everything, they each have their own niche and you won't get much for selling any of them anyway.

the only two that i would think to sell would be the 40mm, and the 55-250mm, and then maybe get something like a 70-200f4IS or so if you need the reach...but those two lenses would net you the least in return, so it becomes if there's even a point to sell

another thought is to switch the 85mm for the 100 f2...that'd give you 35, 50, 100...i think 35 and 50 are far enough apart that you will find the need for both

Thanks for the advice! Don't tempt me with ideas like the 200mm f2.8! I think I'll hold onto everything for a few weeks and see which lenses get use. The 24-105L currently spends little to no time on my camera, but I can't bring myself to get rid of it for those times where I need the flexibility of a zoom. I imagine I'll end up having similar feelings about the 50 or 40.

I have both a 35 and a 50 prime. I find I reach for the 35 a lot more than the 50.

I'm a hoarder so I'm hanging onto my 50 but sounds like you wanna to offload some gear.

Start with the 40 and see how much you use the 50 after your new 35 arrives and make the choice then.

I agree with El Pedro. I have both the 35mm and 50mm on 5d3 and love both of them. I shoot a lot indoors though, so having that bit more or less of reach is needed depending on the space available.

No way I'm selling my primes for a zoom. I'd love that zoom, but I wouldn't use it often enough to justify the cost. I think the 24-105 meets almost all of my zoom needs for the time being. I'm glad to hear that some find use for both a 35 and 50 in their bag. I shoot a lot indoors as well. That makes the 35 an almost necessity, but the 50 is still nice to get candids inside. The 40 would be the easiest to get rid of for sure now. The only benefit that lens will offer me is its compact size for traveling...but I think I'd probably rather the 35 when traveling.

I have the 35 and the 50. On crop, I rarely used the 50, but I prefer it on full frame for closer shots of people. The 35 will be better as a general purpose prime for travel on full frame.
The 50 makes a nice short tele portrait lens on crop.

I wouldn't sell the 50. In fact, I hope that Canon comes out with a new fast 50 with IS. The only thing I don't like about the Canon 50F1.4 is that it feels flimsy, probably because it is. AF is OK, but not as nearly good as on the 35F2IS.

That is what I would suggest. Wait awhile before selling any of your primes until you see what you end up using. I took this approach after moving from a crop body to full frame. I hung onto a 28 f/1.8, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8 and added a 135L. After a year, I found I wasn't using the 28mm or 85mm, and sold them to help fund an upgrade of the 50 f/1.4 to a 50L.

For me, the 40mm pancake serves a different purpose. I added that lens after getting rid of my other primes. I use it as a very small, light weight walk around indoor prime, mostly when we travel. The lens is so small that it takes up almost zero space in the camera bag, and I can put it in my pocket as an extra lens when walking around without a bag, too. At its low price, I would never sell it.

If your GAS starts to act up, just pick up a macro lens. You need one.

Well, if i have same above lens then i will let 40 and 55-250 go with no regret.

Then i think wisely, i have 24-105L, so i don't need 24-70 even for 2.8, i have prime for that.

I will get 1 of 3 lenses and if you are lucky to get those 3 fine:

1. 135L, it is more creative than 85mm f1.8 for portraits, if i have to choose between both then 135L always win unless i am very tight in space, so even that 85mm could be an issue, but 135L will be a nice add.

2. 70-200 if you can afford, not necessary Canon 70-200 f2.8II the most expensive, look at Tamron one or Sigma or even Canon cheaper ones, this lens is like a must in Canon zooms.

3. Either Samyang/Rok 14mm to open more possibilities for UWA shots, or if you feel that 17mm is wide enough then my other option is a macro lens, for example 100, with it you can do some close up shots too, even for events and some portraits, in weddings some shoot close up for rings or glasses or still life for creative arts, it is really a nice lens to use and have fun and i never give it up even if i don't shoot macro or close up much, with my Hasselblad digital i have only 3 lenses and one of them is the Macro lens.
