first 20D trial , any advice?

this is my first slr cam ,took those shots:o... advice is very helpful,please

I have to go somewhere soon so please excuse my having to be brief-
The seaside shot is well exposed but there has been camera movement during the (relatively) long exposure.Use a tripod for any pictures that need longish shutter speeds.
Also learn about hyperfocal distance and focusing that way-this will help you get the most in focus for the least amount of stopping down of the aperture.
I see you've used the rule of thirds to a degree and it looks allmost right.personally i'm very wary about such rules-i would have put the island nearer the center of the frame regardles of silly rules (if it were possible to do so of course)

The portrait shot is also basically very nice.The bright spot behind her is abit disconcerting .
It doesn't look very good on a computer screen but this is mostly because the Jpeg compression is abit too strong.You could upload a less compressed version (this forum allows 100Kb jpegs) .That may help make it look like it should

Those were good shots considering that it is your first DSLR -- that is a good start. I agree with Ron re your first shot. As for the second, you could have used the largest aperture to blur the background so that "focus" is on your beautiful little girl rather than the eyes being drawn toward the other elements in your (I assume) garden... of course unless you wanted your garden in the picture in the first place.

As for posting pics, hop onto photobucket.com (or some other free photo hosting site) so that you can upload your pics there-- this will allow you to post better sized pics, as well as minimise the stress on the server administrator.

like Ron said i have a long way learning, I'll start with that hyperfocus issue since i heard this ward a lot today ..As for my other half , sure I can't tell you right now would this hapiness continue or not ,w'll see...
