outdoor tree Christmas lights?

Last night i tried takeing pics of Outdoor lights,,not very well done ??what settings should i use ?? Canon SL1 +50mm 1.8 II and Canon 7D with sigma 17-70 2.8-4.OS
many bright flares of light in pics,,,hand held on P mode both ISO 400 Please give me some ideas??as to do better tonight??

Yes i have a tripod,,but hopeing to hand hold ??

Posting pics is easy! Look for the "UPLODA IMAGES" to the left when typing a reply. You'll be able to attach 2 images for the thread. I watched some Youtube videos on this subject yesterday.

Shoot at sunset / dusk
ISO 400+
The videos also recommended a lower number aperture, such as 5.6

The only thing I can think for the higher ISO and larger aperture is for a quicker shutter speed which perhaps cuts down the flare?!?!

Handheld is probably not good since the shutter speeds will be somewhat slow.

My wife and I will be giving this a try in a few hours :-)
