I just had to have my EF24-105L repaired because of the well documented aperture module ribbon cable failure. The authorised Canon repair shop I used stated that Canon hadn't modified ribbon cable and the life of the replacement part would be no different to the original.

My lens was six and a half years old. I was wondering how long other users have had their EF 24-105L without it needing repair? I appreciate that the failure rate will be down to usage rather than age but it would be interesting to know how long others have managed.

Rather than googling, I'm just going to follow this thread.

Is the ribbon broken by rotating of the focus or zoom rings? Seems a little odd that wear/use would cause such a problem.

Edit: what I mean is that the lens design should keep the cord from being compromised when zoom/focus is used.

Mine is going on 5 years old. No ribbon issues yet but I do have zoom creep pretty bad and peeling the grip back and tightening the plastic screws didn't help.

I've had 2 that required repair for the IS within 2.5 years of purchase but I've never really been lucky with lenses.

No need to guess. There is a date code on the lens.

True, but I know I got mine specifically on December 28, 2007 because I can check the first shot I ever took with it in Lightroom. That's more precise than a datecode.

So for the OP, my 24-105L will be seven years old (in my hands) in a few days. Never had a problem with it.

Only tangentially related but my 28-135 is over 10 years old and has needed no repair of any kind. It does not creep although the front tube does wobble (I think they all do). Sometimes I wonder about replacing it with a 24-105 but maybe that's not such a good idea.

It's a good idea for image quality alone.

I had the EF28-135 for quite a number of years too, about 11 years before I switched to a new EF24-105 4.5 years ago, it is very apparent right away the IQ was noticeably better.

While I missed the additional 30mm focal length of the EF28-135 sometimes, I certainly don't miss the IQ when compared to the EF24-105.

Back on topic, no issues with my EF240-105 so far.

I don't own the 24-105 but my "main" lens is a 28-105 that dates to the mid-1990's. Perhaps Canon needs to revisit what they did 20 yers ago instead of seeking "new and improved" designs.
