Hey there -

My family and I (wife with two kids, an 8 y/o and a 2 y/o) are trying to plan a trip to Tucson and SE Arizona in February and I was curious to know if anyone had any tips for us:

  • Places to go, things to see?
  • Photography gear to bring? My kit is fairly small so I'll probably bring everything! hah
  • Clothes for this time of year?
  • Anything else?

I should mention I am not specifically thinking about photography related sites/activities, because I will be with my family, but it wouldn't hurt to hear about those too :p

We will be in the Tucson area for a Seattle Sounders preseason game in the Desert Diamond Cup and planned on hitting the Sonora Desert Museum. Anything else in or around Tucson? Hiking isn't necessarily a deterrent, even with the kids. Then, I think the plan is to head E/SE to the area around Tombstone and Pearce - my wife's family was from this area. Also, I should mention that my wife is really interested in Anthropology and I've heard her mention the ghost towns???

Right now, the thought is to stay about a week (weekend-to-weekend). Given this amount of time, how difficult do you think it would be to include the Northern areas of AZ? Would the drive be too much?

Thanks for any tips/info you can provide!

Pima Air Museum's also in Tucson. The Tucson Rodeo is the last week of Feb. this year. Kids might enjoy Old Tucson, which is near ASDM. I'd forget about northern Arizona; even Phoenix would need to be a couple of days effort.

Titan Missile Museum. Educational, fascinating, scary, historic.

Mt Lemon is also a popular place. Scenic drive, good views of Tucson/southern Arizona.

Saguaro National Park, I never went when I lived there but I was always told it's a 'must see'. Don't know about that, just looks like desert. :-P

The University of Arizona is a great place to get Dippin Dots, and that's it. :p

My daughter lives there, and has taken me for hikes in the Saguaro National Park. It's pretty cool if you like hiking.

Good stuff so far guys, thank you! Keep the suggestions coming, please.

What about the area E/SE of Tucson, like the Tombstone, Pearce area? Anything interesting? How about Ghost Towns in that area?

    Thanks again!

Hey Jon - that does look pretty neat, thanks! Any idea what the large white cross up on the hill to the East is all about?

koala yummies - thanks for the links, I got to take a look at them this morning. The Titan Missile Museum piqued my interest, and I'm going to withhold the Dippin Dots info for now... :p

There are some interesting small towns down to the SE of Tucson like Bisbee and Tombstone. Also, there is an area to the SSE which is popular for birders. Saguaro Natl. Park has an east and west version, best time to visit is early AM. Sabino Canyon is a popular day hike in the foothills NNE of town.

Your 8 year old would probably enjoy the desert museum.
