MDJAK,

The old system had some strangely arbitrary filters as well. I remember the "Guess the Movie Quote" thread, I was trying to post Indy's signature line from Last Crusade: "****, I hate these guys", and it ***** out the word "****". I suppose some could take offense, but really....

Looks like the new system did it as well.

RTFM idiot moron wanker bollocks twit fanboy stupid pointless crap

Oooh nice messages. I'll be trying to see what words get picked up.

Seems like a good thing to do, I give it a thumbs up and suggest words get added - perhaps as they get used. The forum is about as friendly as I can imagine, but it never hurts to remind people to be civilized.

If I put in a bunch of asterisks, will the system replace them with a ... "sentence enhancer"? :-)

So I'm answering a pm from a buddy here. He had the gall, the temerity, the chutzpah to ask me a technical question. Can you believe that? So in my reply I told him I'm an idiot and couldn't answer his question if I wanted to. And as soon as I typed the word idiot, a big preview notice popped up warning me personal attacks are not permitted. Really? I mean, really? Is that effective? Will that make people who want to hurl insults think twice before doing so?

Can we say big brother? Geez.

Lol, probably not.

Lol. Agree. Probably not. I was going to reply post the other day but was unable to because I was laughing so hard.

It reminded me of the local supermarkets. They have put up cone barriers to stop parking immediately in front of the store. When I asked the manager why he said it was to prevent robberies. They would park the getaway car outside the door.

LOL. Yea, that's right! Two guys with ski masks and Uzis', about ready to rob a store, possibly gun people down, are going to change their mind because they might get a parking ticket??? LOL.

If anything, the warnings will ENCOURAGE people. If they are about to insult somebody and a little balloon pops up telling them they are being offensive, if anything that will encourage them because it validates what they want.

Not to mention the feature is poorly implemented as is currently written. In writing this reply, I have the yellow warning balloon displayed. I did not use the word, but simply quoted it. Yet, I get the warning.

So to simplify, here is how the feature currently works:

- Person A insults person B
- Person B replies only with "That's not a very nice thing to say about me." but gets the warning displayed because he quoted person A.

Just my personal opinion, of course, but this feature is not ready for prime time.

Not such a bad design if you consider that quoting an insult escalates a fight.

I think the "mean word" alert is a great idea! Especially so because it is not keeping one from using the word - it just serves as a good reminder that your temper may be getting the better of you. I know there've been times when I could have used a bit of "cooling off" before submitting a post.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

And we make a special note to pay extra attention to people who try to circumvent the filters.

That's good. I dislike strong language myself, though I use a word or two as flavouring at times.

What's perplexing is that such a big fuss is made of a word or two (even their use in by now accepted acronyms like RT*M [hmm, snafu and fubar are still unchecked]), when images that are way more offensive and loathsome are happily hosted and displayed; heck, there's even a forum devoted to porn here (thanks, Pekka for the forum filtering feature in AMASS). To be 'concerned' with 'mom, granny and all the kids in the world' reading the word for feces yet exposing them to imagery that would scandalise any self-respecting grandmother faster than one can blink is decidedly self-contradictory and quite hypocritical.

We do not allow porn. Glamour and nude are very different from porn.

The thing with RT*M isn't all about the word, but rather the sentiment behind it. You can say, "that information is located on page XX of the manual." Way different than RT*M. See the difference?

We're trying to maintain a friendly community here.
